The Spanish Armada in Ireland refers to the landfall made upon the coast .

The Spanish Armada in Ireland refers to the landfall made upon the coast of Ireland in September 1588 of a large portion of the 130-strong fleet sent by Philip II to invade England. Following its defeat at the naval battle of Gravelines the Armada had attempted to return home through the North Atlantic, when it was driven from its course by violent storms, toward the west coast of Ireland. Many of the survivors of the multiple wrecks were put to death, and the remainder fled across the sea to Scotland. With the assistance of an Irish chieftain, MacSweeney Bannagh, Girona was repaired and set sail in mid-October with 1,300 men on board, including de Leyva.

The Spanish Armada set sail from Spain in July 1588, with the mission of overthrowing the Protestant Queen .

The Spanish Armada set sail from Spain in July 1588, with the mission of overthrowing the Protestant Queen Elizabeth I and restoring Catholic rule over England. Many years previously in the early 1530s, under instruction from Elizabeth’s father King Henry VIII, the Protestant Church of England had broken away from the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church. And whilst all this procrastination was going on on one side of the Atlantic, English ships captained by ‘pirates’ such as Drake, Frobisher and Hawkins were mercilessly plundering Spanish ships and territories in the Americas.

Irish Proverbs - Laurence Flanagan . Compiled by. Laurence flanagan. Gill & Macmillan. The basis of the present selection is a list that appeared in The College Irish Grammar by Rev. Ulick Bourke, who was intent on producing a more definitive collection, which unfortunately never materialised. The Irish versions are those given by the original compilers, without any alteration or modernisation, while the English renderings are also those put upon them by the compilers. Many appear to be duplications but in fact are slightly variant forms, perhaps from different parts of the country.
