Author Milton Shulman joined the Canadian Army HQ three months before D-Day as a major and was promoted to intelligence officer by war's end. As part of his duties, he made close personal contact with the German Army throughout intelligence operations in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. SIR EDWARD IAN CLAUD JACOB GBE, CB (1899-1993) was a British Army officer who served as the Military Assistant Secretary to Winston Churchill's war cabinet and was later a distinguished broadcasting executive, serving as the Director-General of the BBC from 1952-1959.

Defeat in the West book. It’s not of much value to the serious scholar, but it makes a decent factual introduction for the lay reader or hobbyist. It challenges some of the common myths about the Wehrmacht, although without examining motivations with much depth.

Milton Shulman (1 September 1913 – 24 May 2004) was a Canadian author, film and theatre critic who was based in the United Kingdom for the last six decades of his life. Shulman was born in Toronto, Ontario, the son of a successful shopkeeper. His parents were born in Ukraine and were driven out of the Russian Empire by poverty and anti-Jewish pogroms. Shulman's father was only 26 when he died of the flu epidemic but had already acquired three millinery shops as well as a men's haberdashery.

grand star
To thoroughly enjoy this book you need tobe a WW II history buff. The author was a major in Canadian Army intelligence ane had the opportunity to interview about three dozen German field officers, including several Field Marshals. He also had access to many records including the Nuremberg testimony. Some of these interviews were in POW camps before the war was over so the book is very insightful of the mistakes made by Hitler and the unthinking discipline and loyalty of his officers. The stupidity of the High Command and Supreme Command (Hitler) was appalling but to disobey was death. Hitler did much for the allies to win the war and his officers went along with his intuitive strategies even after they knew the war was lost. The detail and first hand comments by the officers are greatly interesting and enlightening to the reader.

This is a must read! I can't even describe the horror of it at. It has to be experienced by oneself by reading this book to really understand the magnitude of Hitler's evil mind. Blind obedience has no place in the military. There has to be accountable or there remains only tyranny and tyrants. Clearly all this was present in German Army. Raw ambition and greed were at work here and willing puppets to play their parts well. Now I know even more and am saddened to the core by all the millions who died needlessly sImply because one fanatical man wanted to rule the world. Will we ever learn?

This book is based on interviews with several high-ranking German officers (some or all were generals, I can't remember) who fought on the Western Front. The interviews were conducted soon after the end of World War II. Since many or most of them had to fear reprisals and some certainly wanted to vent and/or burnish their reputations, their credibility is suspect, but the broad outlines of their testimony were convincing to me.

The thesis of the book is that German high command, starting with Hitler, was utterly incompetent. It's easy to see why and how defeated generals would blame their superiors for a total annihilation, but I found the evidence compelling. A major secondary message is that command and strategy failures made German defeat inevitable. This outlook leads the author to downplay, maybe even minimize the challenges faced by the Allies in the West. For example, all the accounts of the Battle of the Bulge I had read previously portrayed the battle as a major crisis for U.S. forces, but Shulman's presentation of an offensive doomed from the start by low morale, a dysfunctional command structure and no air cover gives his account a very different tone. I found it a refreshing corrective, but I can see why others might consider it belittling or offensive.

Some other comments:

The German commander at Dunkirk had an especially fascinating perspective on that battle.

There is only one chapter about the Eastern Front.

There is some description of campaigns, but this is far from standard military history with day-by-day descriptions of troop movements and tactics, which I generally find to be deadly dull.

The book ends with recommendations for the future, which are also fascinating from our perspective many decades later. I won't divulge them, but I will say that critics could use them as an argument against the author's credibility or objectivity.

I would consider this book to be essential reading for any WWII specialist/scholar and would highly recommend it to anyone with any interest in the war. I'm certainly no scholar but I've always been interested in World War II. I've read a fair number of books on various aspects of the war, and this is one of the most fascinating I've read about WWII or any other war.

This is an exceptional book that should be in any World War II buff's collection.

The author is part of the team of interviewers who actually talked with captured German military officers after World War II. He obtained incredible, behind-the-scenes details of how the German War Machine operated and decisions they made that ultimately led to their demise. We get to hear from the officers themselves which makes for fascinating reading.

As I dug deeper into this book, I could actually feel the crushing defeat on my shoulders. This book puts you square in the middle of the German High Command as they lost more and more battles, lost more men, and the utter helplessness they felt as the weight of the Allies bore down upon them. At one point, when there were no more military options on the table (the Western Front and Eastern Front had become one), I found myself grasping for any way out. For a history book, I found this immersion to be remarkable.

A worthy addition. Highly recommend.

EDIT: I had a comment about the "rebuilding Germany" chapter in the original review. I removed it since I couldn't express my thought on that chapter clearly.

Mr. Shulman gives the reader a thorough explanation of the reasons for the defeat of the Wehrmacht in the west. He analyzes the actions and the personalities of several generals based upon known events as well as interviews done with them in post-war discussions. His comments in the opening of the book suggest that Germany could have won the World War II, but research since the publication of his book suggests not. The recent publication of "Blitzed" reveals much about the rapid success in France that casts doubt upon that perception. For anyone who has not read "Blitzed", Germany's soldiers almost lived on methamphetamines. This book was researched and well documented by Germans, so it is not an effort to diminish Germany by an outsider. In sum, "Defeat in the West" is well worth reading, but one must also read at least "Blitzed" and research done since its publication to begin to understand this topic.
