Aug 10, 2016 Edward S. Gray rated it it was amazing. A must read for a Navy fan. One of the best books I have read this Sumner, I would also recommend this author's book on HMS Warspite.

The Royal Navy battleship HMS Rodney was one of the most famous warships of the Second World War and remains a legend in the pantheon of naval history. In May 1941 Rodney turned Bismarck, the pride of Hitler's navy, into twisted metal, then participated in hard-fought Malta convoys and later supported the D-Day landings. Rodney's vital role, via formidable naval gunfire support, in breaking the morale of German troops during the battle for Normandy, is outlined here

This is a well written book about an historically interesting battleship. It is rich in detail including many personal accounts of what it was like to be on that ship. The narrative does get bogged down with all these stories that have little to do with the exciting events of this warship. Perhaps too much information at times. But if you are interested in this ship it is worth the read.

Venemarr
The author gives a daily account of what went on with the ship and crew all leading up to the fateful day of meeting up with the dreaded Bismarck.
One has to wonder how someone kept records of how many shells were shot and how many actually hit the mark. Very good historical record of one of the worlds great battleships.

Hilarious Kangaroo
For those with a solid interest in naval history, Ballantyne weaves together a narrative based on official history and anecdotes from a good range of officers and men who served in her. It is rich in technical detail and human interest.

Love Me
All his books are well written, and cover the prior ships of the same same, and the building, deployments and actions of the ship and its crew. For thise with interest in the Bismarck hunt, this fills an interesting void, and describes how it came to be on station at just the right time and engaged the Bismarck, despite the aging engines and pipes in need of a refit. Much of the attention always focuses on the Hood, Prince of Wales and the Ark Royal. The HMS Rodney gets her due in this excellent history.

His other books are also excellent, and one can get a different perspective reading his Killing the Bismarck, which devotes much more space to the hunt and dispatch of the Bismarck.

I bought this book (Kindle version) on a bit of whim. Whilst I was aware of some of the wider naval action of WWII around Great Britain, I wasn't aware of the involvement of HMS Rodney. I'd read books on the convoys of the North Atlantic, the Fleet Air Arm, several books on the sinking of the Bismarck, this book I found fascinating. A definite recommendation to anyone with an interest naval actions. I'd also admit that as a teenager I was fascinated by Naval Wargaming.

Hbr
Close to 14 hours reading, but never boring. What made this book so good was not only was the author great; but he allowed the well educated crew ( mostly mid-shipmen ) to tell their own stories of what was happening in their sections of the ship during battle.
Sinking the BISMARK is only one of many important accompishments of H.M.S. Rodney.

Silly Dog
Since it focuses on a single ship, this book goes into a great deal more detail than the usual naval histories. This allows the reader to gain a better understanding of the events surrounding the history of HMS Rodney, and to some extent, her sister, HMS Nelson. Well-written, with plenty of first hand accounts, I found this an easy and interesting read.

There is a lot more on personal recollections than actual history. You get some info on what was happening and then how it was seen by several different men on the ship with the inevitability of the author repeating the same thing. Worth the read if you want to know more about the ship.
