Captivity narratives are usually stories of people captured by enemies whom they consider uncivilized, or whose beliefs and customs they oppose. The best-known captivity narratives in North America are those concerning Europeans and Americans taken as captives and held by the indigenous peoples of North America. These narratives (and questions about their accuracy) have had an enduring place in literature, history, ethnography, and the study of Native peoples.
Throughout the 1970s, Garland Publishers issued a series of Indian captivity narrative reprints that dated from 1682 to 1962. Below are the 111 volumes in the series and Cornell University Library's holdings for the titles within each volume. CUL Holdings (see notes at bottom of page).
