Michael Burleigh's imposing history of the second world war is the bloodiest George Walden has ever read
Michael Burleigh's imposing history of the second world war is the bloodiest George Walden has ever read. This comes to mind when reading Michael Burleigh's imposing book, because he has scrupulously avoided the abiding sins of the ethics brigade: abstracting, decontextualising and isolating the morality of an action as if it were some specific gene, whose health or toxicity we don our white coats to examine. So this is no arid re-run of debates about the Melian dialogue, or the guilt of entire peoples. Moral Combat deals with morality as something inseparable from life.
This examination of the Second World War explores the moral sentiment of entire societies and their leaders. He is the author of eight well-received books, including & Causes', & Powers', & and Rage' and & Third Reich', for which he was awarded the Samuel Johnson Prize in 2001.
Of course, quite quickly the Germans jettisoned these concerns, shortly after the Polish campaign Hitler issued a blanket amnesty for Germans charged with war crimes. There would never be another instance of mass prosecution of Germans for such offences by their own Army. Burleigh's book is detailed and interesting, but Michael Bessing's "Choices Under Fire" and A. C. Grayling's "Among the Dead Cities" bring a more thoughtful mpral analysis to the war. Read all three.

What is our policy? Churchill asked in 1940: To wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime. It seems fitting, then, that Michael Burleigh has written a history of World War II from a moral (rather than the more common operational) perspective.

But that is, after all, the same view that was argued by the fighting Allies during the war, and by victorious Allies and contrite Germans after 1945; it is the Nuremberg verdict.
