While the post-World War II era has often been characterized as a period when the United Kingdom was in an inevitable decline as a world power, Britain remained at the forefront of technological developments. Unwilling to be solely reliant upon imported technology, particularly from the U.S., British engineers sought to ensure that Britain remained an independent and viable force in aviation. However, economic reality soon set in. The 1957 Defense White Paper produced by the Conservative government has long been viewed as the catalyst for the major cull of the UK aviation industry that soon came about. In truth, this was but a single event in an ongoing process that saw many promising projects foundering due to changes in threats, technology, and economic realities. The fourth volume in the 'British Secret Projects' series shows how the hopes of the time failed to see fulfillment. Following a scene-setting introduction, chapters will deal with test vehicles and guided weapons. This includes those developed for air defense, ballistic missile defense, anti-tank weapons, anti-ship ordnance, and stand-off weapons. The book also covers the so-called 'Super Bloodhound' surface-to-air guided weapon, a ramjet-powered development which was designated Blue Envoy. Also included are ramjet-powered projects like the Hawker P.1134 high-speed research aircraft, the English Electric/BAC P.42 and HSA APD.1019 proposals, and the HS.1034 swing-wing strike fighter.

Como lector muy aficionado a los temas de aviación, puedo afirmar que el libro es excelente. El autor trata con buenas explicaciones y profusión de esquemas y gráficos toda la investigación aeroespacial de la Gran Bretaña desde la segunda guerra mundial hasta el fin de la guerra fría. La temática estudiada es sólo conocida en parte (los tópicos habituales sobre el libro blanco de defensa del 57, por ejemplo) pero con una gran profundidad y claridad. Un libro imprescindible en la estantería de todo aficionado a la temática.

This volume in the "Secret Projects" series contains data that is little to unknown regarding the British research into supersonic jet, ramjets and missiles. You will be amazed at the amount of aircraft projects with each supported by data, photographs, illustrations, three-view drawings and descriptions. One in particular is the Miles M.52 which could have been the first jet to break the sound barrier, save for its cancellation. Many more projects of promise were tested with many being cancelled for political or financial consideration. A great book for the aviation enthusiast, modeler or historian.

The International Resin Modellers Association ([...]) utilizes the complete series in our quest for the next kit subject in 1/72. Highly recommended!

I was amazed at just how much the British were inovators of modern avionics and technologies, military and otherwise.
Further was the history of where many of these ideas came from.
Really surprised me.
