When I was asked to develop a community organizing course for the Aboriginal Emphasis Initiative in the social service worker program at Fleming College, I began running through the list of great books, articles, and other resources I’ve used or seen in the last few years on this topic

When I was asked to develop a community organizing course for the Aboriginal Emphasis Initiative in the social service worker program at Fleming College, I began running through the list of great books, articles, and other resources I’ve used or seen in the last few years on this topic. Although I do have a background in social work, I have also had the opportunity to study and work in the fields of law and Indigenous governance; and so, I look to all of these areas when considering the most current and relevant information on any topic.

Many promote Reconciliation as a new way for Canada to relate to Indigenous Peoples. In Dancing on Our Turtle s Back: Stories of Nishnaabeg Re-Creation, Resurgence, and a New Emergence activist, editor, and educator Leanne Simpson asserts reconciliation must be grounded in political resurgence and must support the regeneration of Indigenous languages, oral cultures, and traditions of governance. Simpson explores philosophies and pathways of regeneration, resurgence, and a new emergence through the Nishnaabeg language, Creation Stories, walks with Elders and children, celebrations and protests, and meditations on these experiences. She stresses the importance of illuminating Indigenous intellectual traditions to transform their relationship to the Canadian state. Challenging and original, Dancing on Our Turtle s Back provides a valuable new perspective on the struggles of Indigenous Peoples.

This is an amazing and inspiring book. Leanne Simpson blends personal stories, oral tradition from elders (as approved by said elders), and insightful analysis to explore the past, present, and future for Anishinaabe people on Turtle Island (aka, North America). Her message is relevant and even urgent for the Anishinaabe, for other Native people, and for non-Natives alike.

Leanne Simpson provides more than an astute and much-needed critique of empty colonial reconciliation processes; she offers a clear alternative for Indigenous Peoples who are working to establish reconstruction and resurgence on their own terms.
