Violence between working-class cohabiting couples in England revealed both convergence with and divergence from the experience of married couples. Men were the aggressors far more often, and motives for violence centered on jealousy and money. Fear of crime means fear of violence and sex offences. It is a phenomenon that receives a great deal of attention in international criminological and crime policy debate. The first time it came to be considered a problem and a subject of study was in the United States in the 1960s (see Boers, 1991:15-39; Ferraro, 1995:1-5). The American example is also particularly apt for depicting the domestic.

Drawing on courtroom proceedings, D'Cruze reveals that women's interest in speaking out against violent crimes often coincide with the court's agenda to discipline the unruly behavior of working men. However, while women used local courts of vindicate their reputation before their neighbors, doing so often compromised their respectability in the eyes of the public.
