Francis Trilogy: The Life. has been added to your Cart. I am glad to see all of the Thomas of Celano's works published in one volume. I am currently reading the third volume concerned with validating St. Francis' miracles. Thomas of Celano only knew the saint, he talked with the witnesses.

Thomas wrote The Life of Saint Francis at the request of Pope Gregory IX. .

Thomas wrote The Life of Saint Francis at the request of Pope Gregory IX on the occasion of Francis's canonization. He enthusiastically announces Francis as a new saint who is no longer a "dear hearer" of the Gospel but, a bold announcer of the Word of God who makes his hearers "children of peace. The Remembrance of the Desire of a Soul, written nearly 20 years later, is radically different from the earlier text. In both books, Thomas keeps in mind the burning issues of the fraternity struggling to interpret their life, especially various provisions of The Rule that Francis left them.

It is true that those who know the saints best are those who lived with them or observed them first hand. Thomas of Celano was one who knew St. Francis and was commissioned to write a book about him two years after his death. This trilogy is a marvelous summation of the saints life by one who actually knew him.

I love these biographies not only because it is easy to read them but also because they are written in times when St. Francis was still very well remembered. This is a witness book.
