Designed to empower knitters with practical knowledge of how yarn becomes fabric and to boost confidence in tackling common obstacles and mistakes made during the process, this knitting how-to guides fiber artists to success in their craft by explaining each word of standard knitting instructions. This illustrated guide offers classically-designed swatch exercises--such as knit-and-purl patterns, cables, shaping, and lace--that can later be combined to create pillow covers, throws, or scarves, in addition to tutorials on how to identify stitches that are properly mounted and master basic stitch movements and math required for each exercise. Promoting a deeper understanding of knitting and its facets and encouraging a bold approach to some of the more complex and daunting knitting styles and designs, this informative manual is essential in assisting knitters of all levels in gaining crafting mastery.

Nothing personal
This would have been a wonderful book to use when I first started knitting as it explains many concepts thoughtfully and clearly. Guage, pattern reading, tension, cables, and lace. In addition it is well organized and the projects increase in complexity in a logical manner from one to the next. However, I have been knitting for five years and have mostly taught myself new skills from watching you tube videos and reading books. As a result, this book is too simple for me or others who have more advanced skills. In short, I wish I had found it when I first started knitting. I do not find it helpful now as I have acquired the skills the book teaches. Though it would have been far more convenient to use this book then learn the skills in the slow willy-nilly fashion most of us do through trial and error.

The author has the reader complete a series of swatches to learn and practice the skills. With the careful choice of yarn, the reader will have enough interesting swatches to combine into a larger finished project such as a scarf, coverlet, or pillow covers. This would make working through the book both educational and satisfying to learn new skills and have a sampler of the result.

The spiral binding makes the book easy to read and work with, as well. The pictures are bright and clear. Overall a beautifully put together book for beginners. Overall 4 stars as it is marketed to all levels of knitters but would be not particularly interesting for those whose skills are intermediate or advanced.

I could knit and purl but that was about it, until I got this book. Now, I can do cables with confidence, read complicated charts and knit in the round.

The book takes you through lessons where you create small swatches to learn each new technique. Each lesson builds on the skills you learned in previous lessons. The author even shows you how you can use your practice swatches for pillow covers. I used cotton yarn for some of them so I can use the swatches as dish or face cloths.

Here's a little article I wrote about my experience with this book. (It's Part 2 of the article)

Please remember to remove the two sets of parentheses in the link! I had to put them in so the link would be printed here.

If you are a beginner knitter and want to learn how to go beyond knitting plain flat things like scarves, I think you will find this book very helpful.

Having knitted for over 30 years, I am very selective regarding additions to my knitting reference library. I came across this lovely book while searching Amazon.com for a visual aide for a new student. Being a visual learner myself, I was immediately drawn to the step-by-step pictorals and the wisdom shared in the author's simple, concise, and no-nonsense style. The reader is assumed to know the basic knit and purl stitch, but Ms. Seiffert gives such lovely practice blocks from basic to advanced patterns. Her wit, sense of humor and honesty put me at ease at once. This is not filled with patterns for handbags, sweaters, etc., but of blocks ending in small projects to improve knitting skills. Best of all, the workbook is spiral bound! I have read and re-read this small gem and have decided to make many of the blocks myself, combining them for either scarves, shawls or afghans. This is a refreshing compilation of "need-to-know" steps as one progresses in the joys of knitting. Whether a knitting veteran or wanting to advance beyond knit and purl, this will be your "go-to" book. This is one publication worth your money. It is a "must buy" and a pleasure from cover to cover. Finally, this is the book to consider giving, along with a pair of needles, and a skein of yarn, to that special someone with whom you want to share the love of our craft.

I love this book, and have recommended it to many friends. Right after learning to knit and purl, I went through the book and did all the squares, and now I really feel that I can walk up to any pattern and know or figure out what to do. I am so grateful that I can knit anything I want, and am not stuck in garter stitch scarves, fearing anything shaped or complicated.

Update, 4 years later: I have gone on from this book to a happy and satisfying knitting career! I haven't yet found a pattern that looked like I couldn't figure it out, because I had all the basic pattern reading skills I needed from this book. Thank you, Fearless knitting!

As soon as I read the description of this book I wanted to get it, and I'm glad I did. I am exactly the kind of "fearful knitter" Seiffert must have had in mind. I can knit and purl, but if I make a mistake, I have no idea how to fix it. Patterns make me break out in a rash because I have no idea how to read them. After reading this book for half an hour I already understand things (like how to undo knitting without disastrous results) that have eluded me forever. The format of the book takes you through one new skill at a time, and the author's explanations and drawings are the clearest I've seen in a knitting book. I can believe that she is a technical writer by profession!

Wow, wow, wow! I've read a lot of books of this type over the years, but this is really the best ever. Not only is the information in this book spectacular, but the projects it recommends will serve to enhance and expand any knitter's skillset. I teach knitting and crochet - including a "fix your knitting" class and this book is now THE book that I recommend to my students. This is now my #1 go-to reference book for any knitting problem and I plan to work every project in the book myself.... fabulous, fabulous book!

I bought this book with the expectation I would learn some new things, but I think I was a bit more of an advanced knitter than I realized. It is a great book, though - I have read thru at least the first 30 pages. It has very detailed explanations of techniques, great pictures, and seems well thought out - the further along you go in the book, it builds on the previously learned skills. Definitely would recommend for someone who is very comfortable with basic knit and purl already, this would take them to the next skill level.
