Wilfrid Blunt (1901-1987) is probably best known today as a biographer of Linnaeus and as the author of the classic study The Art of Botanical Illustration. But Blunt also had his lighter side. Of Flowers & a Village is a novel written in the form of chatty letters from a doting godfather to his goddaughter, Flora, an enthusiastic (if inexperienced) gardener who is recovering from an illness that has left her temporarily bedridden. Although we learn a great deal about daily life in the village of Dewbury, the subject never strays far from gardening-by the novel's end, both Flora and the reader have received a gentle but thorough horticultural education. Never has learning about gardening been so much fun.

This is a pleasant read. One to curl up with and enjoy a cup of tea. The story takes one to an English village populated with interesting characters and lots and lots of plants and gardens. If you love plants and love to garden, I think you'll enjoy this book. Not high drama, but characters and plants! Love it for those times I want to retreat and read a non-stressful, enjoyable book.

In _Of Flowers and a Village_, 59-year-old Wilfrid Sharp (a play on opposites, since the author's name is "Blunt") retires and purchases a home in England largely because he feels it has the promises of a splendid garden. Hoping for a visit from his fellow gardener and goddaughter Flora, he writes to her and invites her. Sadly, he discovers that Flora has suffered an undisclosed spinal injury, and is recovering in Scotland. Flora's age is never mentioned, but based on events that occur later in the book and the types of topics her godfather is open to talking about, it's probable that she's in her late teens or early 20s.

The entire book is in the epistolary form, being letters Wilfrid, somewhat of a curmudgeon, writes to Flora to entertain her during her long recovery. The letters are mostly about plants, but he occasionally talks about his neighbors. Living alone, following his wife and son's deaths, Wilfrid takes great delight in observing them--including one who is obsessed with chopping down trees, an alcoholic teenager, and a man who only likes difficult-to-obtain floral specimens. This is, however, really a veiled trivia book of sorts, detailing curious facts about flowers in no particular order. There's no real plot, other than the recipient's progress through her medical condition, though this is rarely referred to.

Unfortunately, the text contains minority stereotypes, is largely focused on England, and contains some anti-American sentiments. It's possible the trivia reported is no longer true, as well. I would have liked for the book to contain a thorough index, since there is no real organization to the facts contained within. Footnotes detailing whether or not the anecdotes are still accurate would also be helpful. Overall, it's still an interesting read, though I liked it best when read in small portions.
