The main objectives of this text are:

to informreadersof the historical and current learning theoretical principles, concepts, and research findings, especially as they relate to education, and to provide applications of the principles and concepts in settings where teaching and learning occur.

The text focuses primary emphasis on cognitive theories that stress learners’ constructions of beliefs, skills, strategies, and knowledge. Behavioral views are also discussed. Following an introductory chapter on learning that discusses key learning issues and historical perspectives, the second chapter discusses conditioning theories of learning. The next five chapters discuss cognitive theories and processes of learning: social cognitive theory, cognitive information processing theory, cognitive learning processes, constructivist theory, and cognition and instruction. The next four chapters cover the key topics of development and learning, neuroscience of learning, content-area learning, and motivation. The concluding chapter asksreaders to examine their beliefs about learning, fit these with existing theories, and determine how to apply learning principles to improve teaching and learning. Chapters have numerous applications that apply learning principles to real-world settings. By blending theory, research, and applications throughout, the text provides instructors and students with a unified view of learning in educational settings.

If you want to understand learning theories in order to apply them to professional practice in education, this textbook is indispensable. It is absolutely comprehensive in providing information about learning theories and the leading theorists and scientists behind them, while providing a wellspring of examples on how to apply theory to life in the classroom and beyond. Every new term and idea is presented along with useful strategies, which translate the theories well. The scientific experiments behind the theories are well presented, without being overwhelmingly technical, which is the problem I've found with other learning theory books. The text is organized by learning theories, rather than by scientist or by chronology, which makes for easier contemplation of the theory as a whole. An educator could open to any single page in this book and find useful, well-explained, research-based information to incorporate into their everyday practice. The only difficult thing about this book is that it is so thorough and example-rich that one cannot possibly digest the entire text in one semester. It's really a reference book that should be tackled slowly, and with care, in the way that the author appears to have written it. Schunk has a strong understanding how to help people learn, especially when it comes to how to clearly present written information.
I highly recommend this text--it is a great synthesis of the science of psychology and the practice of education. Anyone with an interest in fostering learning through education should read and frequently review its pages.

This is the worst textbook I have ever used. The book is full of very relevant and important information. However, the organization of the material makes it very difficult to follow. The writing is dry and without passion. I understand it is a textbook, but if you are going to write about a subject make it interesting and worth reading.

Good book, but it arrived with a block of about 60 pages unglued from the book spine. I was still able to use it but it was a little annoying.

My school originally required this book for my doctoral studies. The book provides a solid review of educational learning theories.
