This is NOT the same as phonics. Phonemic awareness is actually a critical skill that is a precursor to reading letters. That’s why phonemic awareness instruction should NEVER involve print. If you find yourself working with letters or printed words, then you have skipped a step and crossed the line into phonics. This is a very important point. Ypsalanti, MI: High/Scope Press.

I liked this book but it wasn't as useful in my situation as I hoped. I am a tutor and work individually with students. I do have a few small groups of 4-5 students. Many of the activities assume a classroom setting. They are great but not geared to my sort of instruction. I've used and adapted a few activities and they were fun, but I'd get a lot more use out of it if I were a preschool teacher.

Great teacher book.

The glides don't last very long and are very difficult for me to put on my husband's walker. I'll be looking for a different product.

The hand bells are nice, but the wrong color was sent to me. I wanted the blue center as show in this review. I got the pink ones!

Many books claim to show teachers developmentally appropriate literacy techniques; however, many teach too far above the real (not theoretical) child...but not this book.

Hohmann presents countless activities that involve children in AUTHENTIC (not worksheet) activities that bring phonemic awareness into their lives as a living force. The application and re-application of these activities toward older early childhood children (Grades 1-3) turn this book into a valuable resource that draws a clear picture of how all levels of early childhood literacy relate to one another.

Please check it out!
