Nancy's comprehension and written response strategies give teachers the first-tier Response-to-Intervention (RTI) help they need to get students off to a great start! Good readers think about reading while they are reading. But how does a teacher teach students to apply comprehension strategies as they read? By applying the explicit teaching model to comprehension strategy instruction, Dr. Nancy Boyles offers teachers an easy, effective, and innovative approach to improve students' reading comprehension. Using her book -- rich with models, teacher-talk,and real-life examples -- teachers learn how to explicitly teach students to apply comprehension strategies competently while they read. And with Dr. Boyles' detailed lesson plans and templates, teachers can embed comprehension strategy instruction into guided, shared, and independent reading for both literacy and content-area instruction. Constructing Meaning shows teachers: A kid-friendly way to introduce and model a blended repertoire of comprehension strategies concurrently, so students practice strategies as readers actually use them: flexibly and as an integrated whole while reading; How to refine students' comprehension of fiction and informational text during shared, guided, and independent reading with focused lessons in specific strategy applications; and How to monitor students' progress in reading comprehension and comprehension-strategy use through follow-up activities, rubrics with discrete assessment criteria, and questions that make kids think. Teachers can reproduce classroom-ready visual supports from the book or customize them from the included CD.

I bought this after attending a workshop with Nancy, that our school system provided. She was fabulous! She knows what it's like to be a classroom teacher, and she understands both the demands of differentiation and working with standards-based curriculum objectives. She also provides so much useful, relevant information at her workshops without shilling her books, that I knew I wanted to get one or two. While I found this to be excellent, I prefer two of her more recent titles. "That's a Great Answer" is wonderful for instruction with the primary set, and "RTI Comprehension Instruction" is excellent for grades three and up. What I live about these books is that Nancy gives you book titles to match the lessons, and these lessons are done in the context of shared reading. She then shows you how to use that as the basis for small group, differentiated instruction to really hone in and develop written response. But this is not a scripted program, nor is it based on contrived passages. The lessons are based on high quality, culturally diverse picture books that feature rich language and compelling topics of discussion. The kids love the books, and the instruction is focused so that you can really teach them how to craft a written response that improves their comprehension. This is not about five sentence paragraphs and teaching to the test. It's instruction that will help students think about text and analyze it, using examples from the text to support what they are saying. I recommend any of Nancy's books highly.

Teaching is HARD work. And teaching students to think deeply about what they read is one of the hardest skills to teach. This is a very practical and easily implemented guide to accomplishing this difficult task. A fellow teacher had an old copy of this book and I was so impressed that I ordered it on Amazon for myself. I was thrilled with the CD of forms, which saved me the time, frustration, and headaches of getting a perfect copy out of a book using our uncooperative copy machine. We started right away and I am loving watching my students begin to read for greater understanding and blossoming as readers!!!

I unintentionally stumbled across this book looking for materials related to reading comprehension strategies. I was blown away by this book! It has lots of examples and ideas for integrating all of the comprehension strategies into shared reading and guided reading. Very useful to a classroom teacher! Someone else said they couldn’t get the DVD to work. The DVD works for me Windows 10.
