Chicago Guides to Academic Life.

Each fall, thousands of eager freshmen descend on college and university campuses expecting the best education imaginable: inspiring classes taught by top-ranked professors, academic advisors who will guide them to a prestigious job or graduate school, and an environment where learning flourishes outside the classroom as much as it does in lecture halls. Unfortunately, most of these freshmen soon learn that academic life is not what they imagined. Classes are taught by overworked graduate students and adjuncts rather than seasoned faculty members, undergrads receive minimal attention from advisors or administrators, and potentially valuable campus resources remain outside their grasp.

Andrew Roberts’ Thinking Student’s Guide to College helps students take charge of their university experience by providing a blueprint they can follow to achieve their educational goals—whether at public or private schools, large research universities or small liberal arts colleges. An inside look penned by a professor at Northwestern University, this book offers concrete tips on choosing a college, selecting classes, deciding on a major, interacting with faculty, and applying to graduate school. Here, Roberts exposes the secrets of the ivory tower to reveal what motivates professors, where to find loopholes in university bureaucracy, and most importantly, how to get a personalized education. Based on interviews with faculty and cutting-edge educational research, The Thinking Student’s Guide to College is a necessary handbook for students striving to excel academically, creatively, and personally during their undergraduate years.

I'm a college professor at an 'R1' school, and I've also served as my department's undergraduate advisor, helping students pick classes and deal with the stresses of college. I highly recommend this book - in fact, I bought this book for a cousin of mine who is off to college soon. There are a million books about college out there, and I've taken a look at a lot of them, and this is definitely one of the better ones. For people who went to really high quality high schools or go to a small school where they got tons of individual attention, a lot of the stuff in this book will sound obvious (which is a sign that the author has gotten it right!). But if you are just a normal person trying to make your way through a big college where you might not get noticed or nurtured by faculty and advising staff, then this book is a great way to learn the tips that you need to come out of college not just with a diploma, but with an education.

Very Old Chap
The author is a college professor who clearly cares about the quality of education that undergraduates get - sadly, not something that can be said for many of his colleagues. The advice given here is practical and provided in easily digestible chunks. Highly recommended.

Vetalol
This is a very useful book.
It's full of great tips - kind of like having an older sibling or friend with you giving you all the insider tips to make the most of your education.

Dangerous
I gave it to a relative. I hope she finds it useful. Essentially it says depend upon your self to get educated. No one else will care.

Steel balls
tells a lot that all students an parents should know, but, do not...great insight..

Ghordana
Great book. I bought my freshman year of college and as a senior I still find myself picking it up from time to time to refresh myself on how to do good in school. I think every college student should read these tips.

Tcaruieb
excellent book if you are in the academic advising field

This was a perfect gift for a college freshman who is thinking of changing majors - full of good things to consider.
