This book was a prescribed text for my graduate class and it is packed with insights into the teaching process. It is a practical handbook that delineates teaching strategies for both pre-service and in-service teachers. The book is organized into three parts, i.e. organizing strategies, instructing strategies, and assessing strategies. Under Part One: Organizing Strategies, the point is made of the importance of considering the content, context, and learner in making decisions to do with teaching in the classroom. The chapters outline and explore the strategies employed in the classroom in designing effective instruction, managing time (a precious commodity in teaching), and classroom management. In Part Two, the focus is on instructing strategies and deals with active and passive learning in the lecture format, questioning and discussion, interactive practice, group instruction, reflective teaching and learning (in which students are seen as shareholders), methods to engage students in content, and the use of various stimuli in teaching based on the individual learners' needs (e.g. visuals to attract the visual learner, etc.). Part Three deals with assessment strategies - the importance of the language of assessment, the use of assessments to serve multiple purposes, how to develop and use varying assessment strategies, and factoring in the content, context, and learner in assessment decisions. It also has a section on using self-assessment measures to analyze one's teaching. In conclusion, this is an invaluable reference tool for teachers, especially pre-service teachers as it provides a blueprint for carrying out teaching in an effective manner (which can then be tweaked by educators to suit their needs and their learners' needs).

For me, the most helpful part about this book is the chapter that has you audio tape a 20 minute teaching session. It gives you a step-by-step guide on what to analyze and suggestions for improvement. For example, I always thought I was a positive, upbeat person, but when I had to count how many positive statements I made to the students, they were surprisingly low. Also, I didn't even use their names!

This book gave me several more realizations about my teaching (more than most educational books I've read), which I believe has been invaluable for me on my journey to growing as a teacher AND a person.

I also took Dr. Freiburg's class at the University of Houston, and I really enjoyed it and would recommend his book and class to anyone.
