Charles Kingsley Westward Ho! .

Charles Kingsley Westward Ho! Or, The Voyages and Adventures of Sir Amyas Leigh, Knight, of Burrough, in the County of Devon, in the Reign of Her Most Glorious Majesty Queen Elizabeth. By one who (unknown to them) has no other method of expressing his admiration and reverence for their characters. It is in memory of these men, their voyages and their battles, their faith and their valor, their heroic lives and no less heroic deaths, that I write this book; and if now and then I shall seem to warm into a style somewhat too stilted and pompous, let me be excused for my subject’s sake, fit rather to have been sung.

Westward Ho! is an 1855 British historical novel by Charles Kingsley.

One star not for the book, which I haven't gotten around to reading yet, but this edition!

You know how Amazon has made possible the technology for one to scan, by whatever means, an old text and then somehow have it printed into a physical copy for sale?

I love Amazon! What a time to be alive! This makes possible the printing of otherwise expensive, rare, or out of print texts.

There's just one catch . . . you have to EDIT the resulting scan-in before you print it!

These guys didn't! As a result, there are infuriating scanning errors in virtually every sentence!

Impossible to focus on the text.

Lazy!

Westward Ho! is a difficult book to review as the writing varies from the sublime to the downright silly at times.Charles Kingsley was a Church of England minister and his religious convictions and his dislike of Catholicism is evident throughout. His tub thumping of English valour and Spanish inferiority in morals and in battle is tiresome.
However, the story set in the time of the Spanish Armada is a strong one and the historical research is beyond reproach. It is in fact a great rambling historical epic; a classic as such. Above and beyond beyond this Kingsley's power of description particularly of sea scenes and natural beauty of nature is truly brilliant and a pleasure to read.
I read this book as a boy and was enthralled. Reading it again sixty years later I cannot help but feel it dated. And yet the characters still live and the story is as powerful and moving as ever it was.

An extraordinary tale of adventure in the time of the sea pirates of Queen Elizabeth. It is a spell binding story with a twist and turn on every page. Fascinating. I must say the writing style is of the florid late 19th century variety with lengthy sentences that meander a bit, That said the illustrations by N C Wyeth more than make up for that flaw.

A book written for readers who expected to take their time reading for pleasure. Worth the effort..

This two-star review is specifically for the Scribner's edition--it is HEAVILY abridged, but doesn't say so. I gave it a second star only because it has some beautiful artwork. Get the unabridged edition--it will make far more sense and you will enjoy the fabulous story much more. There's one with introductory material written by Malcom Day! Westward Ho! or, the Voyages and Adventures of Sir Amyas Leigh, Knight, of Burrough, in the County of Devon~ in the Reign of Her Most Glorious Majesty Queen Elizabeth (Scribner's Illustrated Classics)

This book is worth reading if only for the fantastic poetry that usually begins each chapter. It starts off a bit slow, but the action picks up in the second half. The prose is also very beautifully descriptive so I recommend it

A great read for those who are into history. Lots of background giving an understanding of why the events happened. For me it gave a life to all the dry facts that are fed to us from childhood and later taken for granted that we should know.
I'm glad to be able to recommend this book to fellow readers

Our children, Virginia and Liam, have the surname Gubbins and their father, James and I found this book years ago in a book shop in Lyme Regis. We gave it James' father, and the book disappeared after his death, so it was wonderful to be able to purchase another copy, thank you.
They were a feared race of cannibals and could out run a horse apparently. They have been likened to Goblins or Gremlins as they were feared. It wasn't safe to travel from Plymouth to London in the 1500's or you faced being attacked by the Gubbins!
The chapter on 'slewing' the King of the Gubbins is great reading. They are originally from the Tavistock , Exeter region in England it states, which the Exeter library we visited also confirmed.

A great swashbuckling adventure.
Historically sound.
