Philip Dick used that idea for this brief fantasy tale. The next thing I was wondering was about the name of the book, Beyond the Door. I don't quite get it, I suppose I could read the story again to see if I'm missing something, it would only take a few minutes, but I don't feel like it at the moment, so I don't know what the door had to do with the story, other than the clock had to be in some room or.

Philip K. Dick could have been writing a short adaptation for the Twilight Zone had it been around a decade earlier when he conceived Beyond the Door. Telling the tale of a psychologically controlling husband in a loveless marriage who gives his wife the worst wholesale clock find he could ever imagine. What a wonderful little story about a man being punished for having an ungrateful, cheating wife. No lesson to be learned here, and not really the sci-fi story I was expecting.

Story Background Beyond the Door was published in Fantastic Universe in January 1954. I read it in We Can Remember It For Your Wholesale: The Collected Stories of Philip K. Dick: Volume 2. It can be found there on pages 15–20. Plot Summary Larry brings home a German-made cuckoo clock, which he purchased wholesale, as a gift for his wife Doris. Doris is delighted by the gift, but upset that Larry ruined the moment by pointing out that he got it wholesale. Doris begins to wonder about the cuckoo bird in the clock

Science fiction is a broad genre of fiction that often includes narration without reference to experience or fact based on current or future science or technology. Its imaginary elements are largely possible in the laws of nature, although some events in the story can still be a pure imaginary reality. "Did you ever wonder at the lonely life the bird in a cuckoo clock has to lead --" wrote the editor of Fantastic Universe in January, 1954, blurbing this tale "-- that it might possibly love and hate just as easily as a real animal of flesh and blood? Philip Dick used that idea for this brief fantasy tale. We're sure that after reading it you'll give cuckoo clocks more respect." But certainly respects the clock. She went to it after the little bird came out to do his thing. She bent over the little door, her lips close to the wood. "Do you hear me?" she whispered. "I think you're the most wonderful cuckoo in the world." She paused, embarrassed. "I hope you'll like it here." You've got to know he did. . . .

Take a penny-pinching husband, his nutty wife, her secret lover, and a cuckoo clock the husband bought for her – wholesale; don’t forget, he bought it wholesale! – and you have one crazy story that would be a perfect “Gallery Night” television episode.

The wife thinks the bird communicates with her; she communicates with it, for sure. When the husband kicks her out for canoodling with her lover, he keeps the cuckoo clock, and he must live with the cuckoo bird. Or does he?

Truthfully, I had an inkling where this short story was going, but I didn’t figure out the clever ending. It was a good short story over a cup of my morning coffee.

Philip K. Dick scores again with a short story that is bound to leave you more than a little shaken. Do we really have nothing to fear from little hand made machines?

I have not had the chance to read much of Philip K. Dick's work. I enjoy what I have read so far. Beyond the Door is not much more than a short story, but the writing style is very interesting and the story itself feels like an episode of the Twilight Zone. If you are into writing with a definite slant, this is certainly worth checking out.

Good story...also lots of excellent lessons, and a good reminder not to be mean. Like most of PKD's stories, there's lots of invention here. In some ways, this author is a bit like Stephen King, although PKD's style is much less descriptive.

This is a short, quirky story available free for Amazon Kindle. Although the material is neither groundbreaking nor deeply profound, I think you will find it a bit compelling to follow it through. As other reviewers have said, it reads like a Twilight Zone episode and tries for the flashy finale. A big shortcoming is that the material is not well-fleshed out.

Ok, I was on a short story kick this weekend. The reason being is that we were out camping and the short burst of reading I could get in are better served reading short stories for two reasons: A) I don't get wrapped up in reading and neglect the fun times with my son. B) The times I can read I am knocking out a 17 page short story rather and finishing it rather than bits and pieces of a novel.

The most interesting, or absolutely mind twisting story I read was not that of a strange alien invasion or the ethics of youthenasia in dystopian futures, but it was that of the life of a cuckoo bird.

You know, small ordinary clock with a mechanically timed visit from a feathered-bipedal-beaked friend that reminds you it is time to get up, dress for a date or just say a little hello.

Philip K. Dick could have been writing a short adaptation for the Twilight Zone had it been around a decade earlier when he conceived Beyond the Door. Telling the tale of a psychologically controlling husband in a loveless marriage who gives his wife the worst wholesale clock find he could ever imagine.

I wouldn't call this story ground breaking or life changing, just memorable and lasting. In 40 years you won't remember this story for how it moved you or shaped your life direction, but you will never forget the cuckoo bird in the clock, beyond the door.

OK. we're all probably nuts anyway. Thanks PKD.
