The story is full of sexual overtones, innuendos, euphemisms and double meanings. It is wordy in the style of English conversations in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The sentences are wayyyy toooo long and hard to follow. The romance theme is typical of romance novels of years past as well as modern times I.e., an early teen age sexual incident followed by years of separation then a loving reunion at the end. It is a classic considering the time of publication and banned, no doubt, by the men (who were in control) so that females could be kept ignorant of the sexual activities contained in the book.

Clearly, the forward use of metaphors and similes in such a skillful and unabashed manner distinguishes the book as a literary Great.

The eloquent skill aside, Cleland paints a torrid imagery on the canvas of 1740s London.

If only today's erotica could be written so beautifully and lyrically. So tastefully done that I am trying to figure out how to get a copy to my 20 year old daughter since I dont think I could speak so frankly to her about sex, love making and anatomy.

Crazy
I ordered this book for my Kindle because somebody (of course) stole my paper copy years ago. I wanted to compare it with that sophomoric, abysmally written best-seller, those ridiculous Shades of Grey books. Mr. Cleland, "you done good." Your Fanny Hill is as funny, as vibrant (pun not intended, but I like it!), as raunchy yet decorous, and as instructive in the Arts of Pleasuring as ever. I love her and your book about her. Still.

I must add (esp. in view of the cover illustration) that, although Cleland is a man (and it shows in a lot of the scenes), it is MEN who are shown experiencing masochistic delights, not hapless (and very stupid) young women (cf. Grey Shades).

Much more than just "the original dirty book" this is a remarkably well written novel. Although over 200 years old, the author's insights on human nature still resonate. The characters are fully dimensional while the erotic passages, too, are true to life and avoid pat clichés. All in all, a great read and long overdue to be rediscovered.

Ordered this often referred to book on Kindle. Inside is 6 pages of what I can only guess is advertisement for financial services. Never had that happen w a Kindle purchase before. Hoping it isn't a trend.

A young country lass is abandoned in London without any money or supervision. Having come there with the intention of entering into service, she is instead unwittingly swept into prostitution because she is so lovely and there is a strong market for maidenhead. By dumb luck, Fanny manages to hold onto her virginity just long enough to give it to Charles, who remains the love of her life despite her subsequent dalliances. Fanny and Charles are separated against their will, and her life follows an increasingly lurid trajectory as she becomes more than one gentleman's kept woman, works in a brothel, picks up a john on the street, indulges various fetishes, witnesses a male homosexual encounter through a peep hole, and eventually inherits a sizeable fortune from an elderly gentleman with whom she consorted until his end of days. When she and Charles re-encounter each other, Fanny's new wealth enables them to be together, and so she ends respectably married and maternal after all.

The sex in this book is graphic. The descriptions of "engines" and "chinks" are overblown and hilarious. Fanny and her paramours certainly seem to enjoy themselves, and simultaneous orgasm is always achieved! There is never a violent or scary or even utterly abject moment, so a life of prostitution is quite romanticized here.

This edition has some typesetting issues toward the end of the book (dropped letters and mixed up spacing), and sometimes they did interfere with being able to read the text accurately.

The book is a quick read and funny. Fanny is a stereotypical prostitute with a heart of gold who is rewarded with middle class respectability. Not realistic, but definitely entertaining.

Not a fan. This is not an easy read. It is definitely written with language from over two hundred years ago.
