Murphy is the book in which Beckett discovered his first, most pressing theme or, more accurately, the beginning of a way to manage a situation in which he found himself immured.

Murphy is the book in which Beckett discovered his first, most pressing theme or, more accurately, the beginning of a way to manage a situation in which he found himself immured. The protagonist is the first of a series whose names begin with the thirteenth letter of the alphabet, on whom Beckett’s writing afterwards came to turn.

Murphy, first published in 1938, is an avant-garde novel as well as the third work of prose fiction by the Irish author and dramatist Samuel Beckett. The book was Beckett's second published prose work after the short-story collection More Pricks than Kicks (published in 1934) and his unpublished first novel Dream of Fair to Middling Women (published posthumously in 1992). It was written in English, rather than the French of much of Beckett's later writing

Murphy . 6) This is Beckett's first published novel. It’s a difficult book to read. Though only 170 pages long it took three days because I was so reluctant to pick it up and so quick to put it down to do almost anything else. The prose is mannered, stilted and extremely repetitive.

Murphy, Samuel Beckett’s first published novel, is set in London and Dublin, during the first decades of the Irish Republic. The title character loves Celia in a striking case of love requited but must first establish himself in London before his intended bride will make the journey from Ireland to join him. Beckett comically describes the various schemes that Murphy employs to stretch his meager resources and the pastimes that he uses to fill the hours of his days

Samuel Barclay Beckett (/ˈbɛkɪt/; 13 April 1906 – 22 December 1989) was an Irish novelist, playwright, short story writer, theatre director, poet, and literary translator. A resident of Paris for most of his adult life, he wrote in both French and English. Beckett's work offers a bleak, tragicomic outlook on human existence, often coupled with black comedy and gallows humor, and became increasingly minimalist in his later career

Murphy, Samuel Beckett’s first published novel, is set in London and Dublin, during the first decades of the Irish Republic. The title character loves Celia in a “striking case of love requited” but must first establish himself in London before his intended bride will make the journey from Ireland to join him. Beckett comically describes the various schemes that Murphy employs to stretch his meager resources and the pastimes that he uses to fill the hours of his days. Eventually Murphy lands a job as a nurse at Magdalen Mental Mercyseat hospital, where he is drawn into the mad world of the patients which ends in a fateful game of chess. While grounded in the comedy and absurdity of much of daily life, Beckett’s work is also an early exploration of themes that recur throughout his entire body of work including sanity and insanity and the very meaning of life.

This early novel by Samuel Beckett was a total delight, filled with humor and typical Beckettian touches. His characters—all very Irish and all mad—some of them even working in or committed to mental institutions—are full of life and unique opinions. Although I have seen all of Beckett's stage plays and read most of them as well, I have just begun to read his fiction. This was a delightful start, though there were some passages that were a bit tough for an American reader.

There is a French language version of this novel whose translation was overseen by Beckett himself, but I think it is best to read the English-language version as the Hiberno-English flavour and rhythms are essential to the identity of the characters their setting and humours... Rereading Murphy for the first time since my teens (moons ago!) I was struck with the similarity to Flann O'Brien though O'Brien is far less obtuse or morbid, while his At Swim Two Birds, published almost at the same time, is vastly superior in my view. Who would have foreseen Beckett as the future Noble laureate? Murphy is a romp, clever, wildly funny, tantalising, bewildering... All at the same time. It is very enjoyable and its vision of a mad sad world filled with frustrated longing and desire will stay with you.

This book is intense. I started reading it, and I would get tired reading the book because it was so thick in meaning, especially compared to today's novels. So I desired to get the audio version as well. What an improvement for this book, for me. Also, I love the accent and change of voice, male to male to female it was quite a treat. I had never done an audiobook before. That said yes this book it great, and for those that like thick material and high brow reading this is your book.

This is an interesting book, but for me personally, not one of my favorites. Read this for an Irish literature class.

I bought this edition because my copy from over 40 years ago went missing. The young Beckett was quite humorous and far less experimental than he became a bit later on. The seeds of his absurdist worldview are there, along with his tremendous erudition. As such, it's a rather academic undertaking and not particularly suited to the casual reader.

Nafyn
Beckett is not to everybody's taste but he really does put the human condition under the microscope. I can't say that I enjoyed Murphy but I don't see that as a problem. This is challenging writing and Beckett didn't write pot boilers, maybe if he had he would have been more wealthy! If you can tolerate absurdity but thrill at great writing give Murphy a try.

Fato
A difficult read but so worth it!

Brilliant, as usual with Beckett
