Big Two Hearted River. Part I. The train went on up the track out of sight, around one of the hills of. burnt timber. Nick sat down on the bundle of canvas and bedding the baggage. He turned and looked down the stream. It stretched away, pebbly-bottomed with shallows and big boulders and a deep pool as it curved. away around the foot of a bluff. Nick walked back up the ties to where his pack lay in the cinders.

It features a single protagonist, Hemingway's recurrent autobiographical character Nick Adams, whose speaking voice is heard just three times. The story explores the destructive qualities of war which is countered by the healing and regenerative powers of nature.

Recently, I started to read To Have and Have Not by Ernest Hemingway but I put that book on hold and am currently reading a short story by Hemingway called Big Two-Hearted River. Big two-hearted river -A way you'll never be -In another. It is about a boy Nick who is living in a destroyed Michigan and his journey across the nature the earth brings to him including the Great Lakes of America. Personally, I wouldn’t recommend it for someone like me since I am not a very good reader and am easily distracted if the book doesn’t attract me right away.
