The Wreck of the Titan: Or, Futility (originally called Futility) is an 1898 novella written by Morgan Robertson. The story features the fictional ocean liner Titan, which sinks in the North Atlantic after striking an iceberg. Titan and its sinking have been noted to be very similar to the real-life passenger ship RMS Titanic, which sank fourteen years later. Following the sinking of the Titanic, the novel was reissued with some changes, particularly in the ship's gross tonnage.

Details that are so close that you begin to question how such a thing is possible. However, the focus of this story has very little to do with the Titan itself.

The Wreck of the Titan Or Futility. Author: Морган Робертсон. Publisher: McClure’s Magazine and Metropolitan Magazine. Morgan Robertson revised his work in 1912 after the sinking of the Titanic and made the ship larger as well as changing the ending of the story. Exciting marine adventure that apparently predicted Titanic disaster 14 years before it actually had happened.

SHE was the largest craft afloat and the greatest of the works of men. In her construction and maintenance were involved every science, profession, and trade known to civilization. On her bridge were officers, who, besides being the pick of the Royal Navy, had passed rigid examinations in all studies that pertained to the winds, tides, currents, and geography of the sea; they were not only seamen, but scientists. The same professional standard applied to the personnel of the engine-room, and the steward’s department was equal to that of a first-class hotel

By: Morgan Robertson. This novel was published a full 14 years before the sinking of the Titanic, but listeners may be surprised at how many parallels this fictional tale has with subsequent true events. The Titan is the largest and most technologically advanced steamship of her time. Her full speed crossings of the Northern Lane Route carry her rich passengers in the highest standards of luxury and comfort. The less well-off travel in rougher quarters but still benefit from the speed of travel. These crossings, however, are fraught with navigational hazards, the.

He started, turned aside as if to avoid her, and raising his hand in an embarrassed half-salute, passed on. Out of the boatswain’s sight he leaned against the deck-house and panted, while he held his hand to his breast. What is it? he muttered, wearily; whisky nerves, or the dying flutter of a starved love. Five years, now-and a look from her eyes can stop the blood in my veins-can bring back all the heart-hunger and helplessness, that leads a man to insanity-or this. He looked at his trembling hand, all scarred and tar-stained, passed on forward, and returned with the sandpaper.

This book and this author for that matter is only remembered because he wrote a book about an ocean liner colliding with an iceberg over a decade before the Titanic sank. Aside from colliding with the iceberg, the story diverges from the actual Titanic incident dramatically and is mostly about a seaman onboard who has fallen on hard times and eventually redeems himself. The story itself is rather simpllistic and even juvenile. The other short stories included with the main short story are mainly silly and a waste of time(pirates stealing a destroyer, the Japanese trying to blind American saliors or a weird long triangle on a submarine). Aside from the iceberg coincidence, this book is really a waste of time.

This book has 4 stories:
1) The Wreck of the Titan
2) The Pirates
3) Beyond the Spectrum
4) In the Valley of the Shadow

The Wreck of the Titan story is only 38 pages and it barely discusses the sinking of the ship. It only states that the ship was at full speed when it hit the iceberg and went down. I was actually expecting to read more about the incident but there was not much said about it.

The book contains four short stories, all having to do with ocean-going ships, and written around the turn of the 20th century. The writer seemed to be an expert on naval jargon and procedures, and his descriptions do give you a good idea of how the Navy might have functioned at the time. The writer's talents, however, were not at all on a par with at least one other leading Science Fiction writer of the time, namely H.G. Wells. As many readers already know, a couple of these stories seem to eerily foretell later events. "The Wreck of the Titan" features the world's largest and fastest passenger liner coming to grief on an iceberg and sinking. However, the story itself spends most of its length dealing with the legal aftermaths and the fortunes of one character determined to make certain that the truth comes out concerning the Captain's malfeasance. The second story, "The Pirates," tells of escaped prisoners who commandeer a Navy vessel for their own use until finally subdued by the one officer who had still been aboard. These two stories are both reasonably entertaining, if unlikely, and give much detail about the seagoing culture of the time. The writing style is clear and readable, but stiff and very dated. The last two stories in the book are unremarkable and worth skipping, although "Beyond The Spectrum" manages to foreshadow the war with the Japanese. You can read the book for the uniqueness of the stories, but don't expect to find anything approaching great writing.

At first I was disappointed as Futility (The Wreck of the Titan) itself took only a small part of the book. --the first 39 pages of the 143 pages of the book. After that there were 3 other unrelated "sea" stories by the same author. I was expecting that the Titan would be more compared with the similarity of the ,.. Titanic, but it was really the story of John Rowland . If I had paid more attention to the description, I would have known this. Still it was an interesting story of a man's character and how it developed, and glad I purchased it.

I liked the book. I considered it was written decades before when speech was a little different, so it was a hard read to follow. The book is well written and is a precursor to the actual Titantic Disaster. I believe this author saw an echoe of the futurer and he placed it in the book as a story. Some people even painted pictures of Titantic's tragedy. Good book and I highly recommend it.

There are two books in this kindle download: the one I wanted to buy and a second about piracy at the turn of the 20th century. The book I bought-Titan-was purchased while on a cruise just after hearing a lecture on the sinking of the Titanic. It was pointed out that this book years before told the story of an unsinkable ship that hits an iceberg and sinks. True but the resemblance ends there. Characters, subsequent history, plot, eventual result and conclusion have nothing to do with aftermath of the Titanic sinking. I didn't find it worth reading except as a historical curiosity.
The attached surprise book on early 20th century piracy was less interesting as a plot with slightly more interesting characters
The price is right for these books on Kindle but your time has value too. If you want different kinds of sea stories this might work but maybe not.

This book includes several stories of sailors. I found them all quite good, although sometimes I tired a little of the small happenings during long days at sea. None of the stories disappoint. They are full of human foibles, but the good guys are really good guys. The women faint a little more than I like, but perhaps they were wearing tight corsets. He doesn't go into THAT much detail.

This work is referenced in nearly every history written about the Titanic. I was ecstatic to discover that it was in digital format by Amazon as a FREE download. It is impossible not to superimpose knowledge of the Titanic disaster on the descriptions of the Titan as that knowledge has become part of our psyche. The parallels are indeed eerie as this book was written several years before the Titanic was built. The love story that underlies the tragedy of the sinking is, in the writing style of its time, melodramatic, and the "rescue" completely beyond credibility, but it's fun to read. Thank you Amazon for your generosity. I purchased this work from your largest competitor (I have e-readers in both formats). I chose their least expensive offering, but was surprised and a bit confused by the fact that they offered several choices of varying prices. The one I purchased has just the novella, The Wreck of the Titan. The one I obtained from you has not only that, but many other novellas and short stories from Morgan Robertson as well.
