This being Lowry, the whole book is about a long and prodigious drunk. But there's so much more. I haven't read Malcolm Lowry's much lauded "Under the Volcano" so many of the references in "Dark as the Grave wherein my Friend is Laid" were right over my head.

This being Lowry, the whole book is about a long and prodigious drunk. Grave has a level of self-referentialism that I’d never encountered in print prior to Borges. Malcolm Lowry was being appreciated like never before . Well, like he was in the year or two immediately after the publication of Under The Volcano. In the brief window before the publishing industry realised he was too neurotic to ever hand in work as finished. But Lowry explores and describes landscapes and places and travel and bodily pain and regret and horror and dreamlike states with his characteristic negative flair. This book is funny, is poetic, is readable, and is a fascinating insight into how Lowry felt about Under The Volcano, how Lowry felt about writing, how Lowry felt about himself and how Lowry felt about Mexico.

An unfinished novel, Dark as the Grave Wherein My Friend Is Laid (1968), throws some light on his writing.

Because so much of The Voyage That Never Ends was left incomplete (much of it hardly begun, barely going beyond his initial conceptual framework) what exists only hints at the final form Lowry intended for his magnum opus. A stunning examination of searching for lost time a la Proust, set against critiques of American tourists, fantastical bouts of tequila drinking, the Mexican landscape, and some of the most powerful examinations of love ever written.

"Dark as the Grave" is a fictionalized account of a somewhat disastrous vacation Malcolm Lowry and his wife took to Mexico in order to relive a previous Mexican vacation which also proved disastrous. Although the basic premise is clear- the narrator and his wife flee to Mexico in order to escape any number of legal and marital problems- once in Mexico, the book focuses on the spiritual and moral struggles of its main character, who is essentially Lowry himself. Dragging his wife from town to town, riding overcrowded buses and staying in less than ideal lodgings, the narrator relives his past mistakes, wrestles with regret, and finally reaches a place, both physically and spiritually, where he is able to confront his demons head on and leave both the literal and figurative Mexico.
Based upon notebooks Lowry and his wife kept during their journey, "Dark as the Grave" remained unfinished when Lowry passed and was later finished by his late wife. It is not so much a linear narrative as a look into the tortured and creative mind of its author. Some questions are never answered and the book's intellectual focuses sometimes meanders, but overall, "Dark as the Grave" is a intriguing insight to the genius behind "Under the Volcano".

about 'Dark as the grave wherein my friend is laid' Douglas Day, Malcolm Lowry's biographer writes: "in early december 1945, malcolm and margerie bonner lowry flew from vancover, british columbia, to mexico city. they traveled by bus down to cuernavaca, where lowry had lived with his first wife, jan, in 1936, and where he had begun Under the volcano. on new year's eve lowry heard from jonathan cape, to whom the completed manuscript of under the volcano had been sent, that they could not accept the noel as it stood; many revisions were needed.

this much is the matter of 'dark as the grave wherein my friend is laid'. during the entire trip both lowry and his wife made notes as they went along-dialogues, descriptions, copies of signs along the way, all sorts of random obervations. some short time afterwards, lowry looked through all the notes of the mexican journey, exclaimed, 'by God, we have a novel here!' and fell to work on 'dark as the grave'.

seven hundred pages of notes and drafts were left by lowry in 1952 and not returned to before his death in 1957.

now, this book is no 'under the volcano'.
