The Wooden Horse book. There are two significantly different versions of this book.
The Wooden Horse book.
The Wooden Horse is a 1950 British Second World War war film directed by Jack Lee and starring Leo Genn, David Tomlinson and Anthony Steel. It is based on the book of the same name by Eric Williams, who also wrote the screenplay.
The Wooden Horse: The Classic World War II Story of Escape. Only as Williams admitted years later in an anniversary update - that part never happened and was put in to satisfy the publishers who wanted a more "exciting" ending. and he is right to come clean on the point - the story was exciting enough without needing tweaking - ingenuity under strain of captivity is well portrayed in the book and after the frightening journey across Germany - his debriefing by an Intelligence Officer counterpoints what went before in a very British and understated way.

The Greeks built a wooden horse and by means of it got into the city of Troy; in 1943 two British officers built a wooden horse and by means of it got out of a German prison camp. Together with a third companion, they were the only British prisoners ever to escape and reach England from this camp, though many tried.
Two officers made home runs via a tunnel dug in the open air beneath a wooden vaulting horse from Stalag Luft III. The author, a Royal Air Force bomber captain, was shot down over Germany in 1942 and imprisoned in Stalag-Luft III (site of the 'Great Escape' later in the war). He escaped after 10 months and, accompanied by a fellow RAF officer, made his way back to England.

Most importantly the book gives an accurate impression of the tone of life in a POW camp, the dangers of being on the run after the escape and the stress and strain of the eventual escape. The section on life in the camps shows a group of active, confined and rather rowdy men going slowly mad but hiding it between endless banter, hobbies and the hope of escape.
An epic adventure-the most brilliant escape and evasion from the Nazis ever written . Digging an underground tunnel hidden beneath a wooden vaulting horse, he managed to escape after ten months and, accompanied by a fellow officer, made his way back to England.
