House of Whispers has potential. It's supposedly takes place in the 20th century, but at times I couldn't tell if it was set in the 50's/60's or 20's/30's or even the 19th century. I would have liked a little more complexity to the story and more depth to the characters. at least in my opinion. I found I was just reading the book to get to the end.

I would have liked a little more complexity to the story and more depth to the characters. I didn't like when there was almost a whole page of Italian or French and no translation....it may work in a movie, but not in a book....at least in my opinion.

I found I was just reading the book to get to the end. I only stuck with it to find out what possibly could have caused the heroine such trouble. I felt the story dragged in some parts and then rushed together in the last 5 chapters when the author realized he needed to end the book. I'm just glad it was a free book.

There is another copy of this book with a 2004 copyright. This review is at both, but this is the copy I downloaded on my Kindle. Formatted for Kindle just fine.

"The House of Whispers" is a book written and set in the early 20th century. The main character is Gabrielle Heyburn, who we come to find out holds a terrible secret from her past, and this secret keeps her from revealing the truth to her father and also her lover. There was a lot of buildup in the book for her dastardly deed, and I found it a bit frustrating at times as to why the young lady simply couldn't tell the truth about what happened. I also think by 21st century standards, this is a bit of a far-fetched premise.

The title of the book focuses on a legend surrounding whispers heard in the dark of night and how this leads to near immediate death for anyone that hears them. This was mildly interesting, but not really that mysterious or compelling.

Overall, the story was entertaining, but nothing great. Fortunately, it was a short book, and it moved along fast enough to reveal the source of the whispers and to learn Gabrielle's secret.

You can feel the tensity and imminent horror at hand. I think the author did a good job here.
The revelation of the first of the 2 mysteries of the book, the whisper, is suprising but reasonable.
The 2nd mystery, the fear of the daughter, is a little far reaching and hard to comprehend.

I feel the major characters of the story less likable. At the beginning you have every reason to be touched by the love between the father and daughter. But reading through you will doubt it. The daughter basically watches and lets her dad to fall without trying to rescue him, just to protect her secret. The dad got mad and suspecious at the daughter under the manipulation of the enemy, too easily in my opinion.

If you haven't read the 'woman in white', I would recommend it. These 2 books fall in the same category, and you can tell a masterpiece from an OK work.

I love English Mysteries, especially those set in a large estate house. This one is set in Scotland, but it's in a castle and it's still just like a good old English mystery. The setting is a mansion or perhaps modern-day (modern meaning 20th century) castle, which was built next to the original castle, which is now a brooding, crumbling ruin... in other words, PERFECT! The story is somewhat unusual in that the main characters are a teenage girl and her blind father. Her mother died early and Dad remarried, to, of course, a woman who is essentially a gold digger... but that is probably spoiler so I won't say more about them. It's well written, suspenseful, and entertaining. I suppose it's not really a "classic" of the mystery genre, but it's a classic British/Scottish mystery novel. I only had a problem with one element of the plot, which was how quickly the relationship between the Father and Daughtr changes, but that didn't stop me from enjoying the book thoroughly. Anyway, I totally recommend this one for insatiable consumers of the English(or Scottish) type mystery.

Cel
The house of whispers didn't apprear until chapter 11. So why the title? Anyway, I found it impossible to read in some places because I couldn't understand the Scotish dialect. Other places were hard to understand and read.

I suppose it would have been a very good book, if I could have read it. Sorry, I can't suggest it.

I truly do enjoy a good mystery. I very much liked this story, it was easy to keep focused because the writer knows what he's doing. Just enough story at a time to keep your attention and smooth flow makes it easy to stay with it. The story itself is different and very enjoyable.
