The Serpentine Cave book. Jill Paton Walsh’s Knowledge of Angels is one of my all-time favourite novels, as many of you will probably know, and so I was excited when J gave me this novel, which he’d unearthed in a second-hand bookshop and which I’d never heard of before. There’s always a frisson of excitement when you come across a ‘new’ book by an author you like.

Jill Paton Walsh interests me. I first read her completion of a Lord Peter Wimsey detective story, unfinished by Dorothy Sayers. Then a couple more - sequels - about the same characters. I have remarked elsewhere that Paton Walsh discovered what a lot of us always knew - that Sayers's other characters were more interesting than the protagonist. Then some novels of her own about a woman detective in a Cambridge college. Not at all bad.
Now here we have a serious novel. There seems no point in relating the plot - Amazon does that for me; the middle-aged woman round whom the plot revolves is interesting and identifiable with - there's always something we wish we'd asked our parents before they died.
Most of the action takes place in St Ives in the West of England, the place where such notables as Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson had lived in a community of artists probably more concentrated that was good for it. Now, in the present day, it shows us a picture of rural decay typical, perhaps, of similar erstwhile fishing settlements all along the coasts of Britain and Europe. Indeed, I would say that St Ives is one of the principal characters in the book.
I found it interesting and absorbing, and the resolution satisfying in spite of - because of? - several strings left hanging in mid-air.
Paton Walsh? Any relation of the impressive reporter on CNN?

I first read Paton Walsh with the completion of Dorothy l. Sayers mystery novel, THRONES, DOMINATIONS and thought she wrote very well. This novel is also well-written; the characters are believable. The situation of never finding out who your father was is a little less believable, but as another review states, the artist character who keeps the secret, very well, could be the type to keep a secret to her grave. I liked the use of a real story from the coast of England as a part of this novel. The people of the village were intriguing as well as the major characters. Marion, the protagonist, finally finds her father but more she finds herself. She realizes that life is what is made of it, and we are responsible for making a happy life. And we are more like our parents than we ever want to be.

The Serpentine Cave is a beautifully written story about a middle aged woman's search for her unknown father. Set in Cornwall, this novel evokes the spirit of this special region of England, and is a lovely study of a woman's search for her self in the context of her own past and that of her homeland.
