The beginning of Kerstin Ekman's brilliant novella, 'The Do. A fable in which Ekman explores the nonpareil affinity between a man and a once domesticated dog that through, unfortunate circumstances whilst a pup, had over time, turned feral. Ekman's novella is a unique and intelligent observation of loss, survival and ultimately salvation, seen through the eyes of a dog. Ekman's epicurean prose epitimises a writing style that lends itself perfectly in a unequivocal unification of fact and fable.

Suddenly, he must find food and a safe place to sleep, and outwit his competitor, the fox. The puppy becomes wild himself, trusting no human and furiously fighting the hunting dogs that enter his domain. But one man is intrigued by the now-unruly dog and very slowly begins to gain his trust. Each day he visits the dog, bringing food and awakening memories of his distant domestic past. It was ok.It didn't really grab me and I don't quite understand how it became such an acclaimed book.

This book basically has two characters (although there are others included very briefly) - a dog and a man. Neither is named and the story is told completely through the dog's experiences as he survives from puppy-to-adulthood in the wilderness, before becoming united with a man. As such the book is direct, simplistic and a wonderful exploration of the drive to survive - warts and all.

Monin
Being mainly told by the dog. It was very interesting having him tell us how he survived. Sometimes it almost brought tears to your eyes. Then the rescue part kept you on edge. A very nice story.

Qusserel
So detailed I felt like I was in the dog's paws. I enjoyed the perspective of the dog and the man's thoughts at the end. Great story I read in 1 day I wished it was longer! A must read for all dog lover's.

FLIDER
And now for something totally different ... A must-read, particularly for animal lovers. I now understand my own pooch so much better - different worldview from ours!

Agalen
Nice and quick!

I'm a sucker for stories about dogs and horses. "The Dog" was by far one of the most interesting and very different ones that I've read. Although the story may tear at your heart while reading what this little puppy and then young dog went through to survive, you'll be smiling with the sweet, happy ending. It confirms my faith in the relationship between dogs and humans who really care.

one of the best books i have ever read! magical, enchanting, evocative. if you have ever loved a dog you should read it.
