Beneath the Skin book. For some reason I always thought Nicci French was a female romance writer, so I always passed her books by when I saw them. Not only was I wrong about the genre, but I recently learned what I thought was a "she" is actually a husband and a wife writing team. Who knew? -(apparently everyone else but me). BENEATH THE SKIN is a British suspense thriller told from three different points of view

Beneath the Skin is a spooky, highly effective psychological thriller. Nicci French title I've read and it follows the familiar pattern of a first-person female narrator who is somehow in peril (stalker, kidnapper, et. Formulaic, yes, but winningly so.

Beneath the Skin is a spooky, highly effective psychological thriller. Initially, the women refuse, as do the police, to take the threats seriously-they are happy, they are inviolable; surely these letters are the work of a harmless crank. But the novel watches Zoe, Nadia, and Jenny move from blithely insouciant denial, to frustration, to creeping terror, and finally to the stark realization that neither they nor anyone else will prevent this killer from destroying them.

In the summer, their bodies catch heat. Dark shining liquid under the skin

In the summer, their bodies catch heat. Heat seeps in through the pores on their bare flesh; hot light enters their darkness; I imagine it rippling round inside them, stirring them up. Dark shining liquid under the skin. They take off their clothes, all the thick, closed layers that they wear in winter, and let the sun touch them: on the arms, on the back of the neck. It pours down between their breasts, and they tip back their heads to catch it on their faces.

Well, I wasn’t in a hurry at all. But I thought if I created an impression of hurry, I might trick myself into getting something done. By the time I realized my mistake, it would be too late. be back in control of my life. I found an old cotton skirt under my bed and pulled that on, with a black sleeveless T-shirt over the top so the chocolate stain was hidden. An overexcited child must have rammed into me holding a Mars bar or something. I glanced at myself in the mirror

Zoe, Jennifer, and Nadia are three women with nothing in common. Except for the man who wants to kill them. He sends them terrifying letters, full of the intimate details of their lives - the clothes they wear, their little habits, how they act when they think they’re alone - and promises that he will bring those lives to a violent, horrible end. But not before he has enjoyed himself

Zoe, Jennifer and Nadia do not know each other and have nothing in common, except the man who intends to kill them.

Zoe, Jennifer and Nadia do not know each other and have nothing in common, except the man who intends to kill them. A truly frightening read - especially if your worst fear is being alone, being watched and losing all control of your life, as some faceless person takes it all away. Find similar books Profile. Although I only gave this book three stars, I do have to confess that it was an entertaining read. The story is essentially divided up into three parts, each one spoken by a different character. These three characters are connected by a serial killer and the authorities who are trying to catch him. French does an admirable job in creating three very distinct voices. The reader almost feels like each part was written by a different author. I really enjoyed the first third of the story, as described by Zoe, the first victim. The plot develops and the reader becomes involved in the story. Unfortunately, it goes downhill after that. The next two victims, Jennifer and Nadia, are two of the most irritating female characters I have ever encountered. Jennifer is spoiled, whiny and self-absorbed. She has no redeeming characteristics to overcome her bad qualities. Altough she is a former hand model, and presumably beautifuly, it is hard to imagine what even a serial killer sees in her. Nadia is an arrogant know-it-all, whose self-righteousness wears very thin. I suspect she is supposed to be the strongest character, but she is merely obnoxious. By the time I got to Nadia, I was seriously questioning the killer's taste in women. Still, if the reader can ignore the irritation quotient of these two characters, the story is entertaining. It is a predictable who-done-it that moves quickly. It isn't rocket science, but it makes for good late night reading.

After I read her "Red Room" and liked it so very much, I decided to check out other books of hers on Amazon.com I was unsure about the subject matter and/or direction on most of them...and then I came across this one. I was right. It is the story of three women who are stalked by the same very mysterious stranger, and is told in each of their voices as they struggle to understand why they have been chosen. Ms. French gives each of these women a completely unique and separate voice and creates detailed characteristics that are true for each. It is a chilling and compelling book where you slowly comprehend and after initial disbelief, the hair on the back of your neck starts to rise. And she doesn't cheat - all of the clues are there for you to see, but you end up making the same mistakes as the three women. Terrific read.

I think this is the 4th (or 5th?) Nicci French title I've read and it follows the familiar pattern of a first-person female narrator who is somehow in peril (stalker, kidnapper, etc.). Formulaic, yes, but winningly so. I enjoy them because they work. They are well written and taut and fulfill the mandate of every thriller to be a page-turner.

And this one was a little different than previous titles I've read: there are 3 different female narrators who are all voiced clearly and well. Quite deftly done.

Difficult book that was in three parts. I didn't guess the outcome as it enfolded and so was a surprise when I finished reading this book but simply loved the life the characters had there and could see a little more. Actually, one of her other books that I read first was my favorite and keep hoping something else might come along later.

After reading several reviews of this author's books, I thought they might appeal to me. I absolutely could not finish this book. I seldom continue reading a book if I am disappointed by the first third. However, I did read almost halfway through and could not take any more of it. I was rooting for the serial killer to hurry up and kill everyone in the book. It was boring beyond belief.

Have just found the Nicci French books, and they're great.

I absolutely loved loved loved this book. I read it all in one sitting. Brilliantly written. Couldn't put it down

This was a fantastic book! So well written and the characters had such depth to them that I would think about them even when I had put the book down and was doing other things.
