Peter Benchley cruising the waters of the Sea of Cortez in 1980 on the back of a giant manta ray. The gentle beast, eighteen feet wide, accelerated so fast that Peter had to grip its lip with one hand and its wing with the other and lie flat against its back. Framed by the manta’s unique horns, or cephalic fins, Peter flew to dangerous depths, banked around seamounts, then soared again toward the ocean surface. He described feeling like a passenger in an F-16 jet fighter who had no control over his thrilling, majestic craft.
The Sea of Cortez itself, he said, existed because of an ancient accident. According to the story, as they cruised north along the west coast of the American continent, the Spaniards suffered badly from the heat. Ages and ages ago, the peninsula known as Baja California had been part of the Mexican mainland. At one point, Cortez was supposed to have remarked, in Latin, to one of his officers that he found the region to be stinking hot, as hot (calidus) as a furnace (fornax). Nowadays, Jobim had said, some people don’t call it a sea anymore. They call it a gulf, the Gulf of California.

What Peter Benchley did to demonize the ocean and its inhabitants in Jaws and Beast, he equally romanticizes it in The Girl of the Sea of Cortez. This is Benchley's love letter to the sea. Short and simple, Benchley tells the tale of Paloma, who tries to live by the morals and lifestyle set by her free-spirited (and now deceased) father, while trying to stand her ground against her pigheaded and vengeful younger I really want to bump this up to ., because it was pretty close to perfect.

Jo had put a line around her anchor rope, so they were moored together. He was still looking through the glass-bottom bucket see. Paloma’s heart was stuttering. She could hear it beat in her chest and feel it in her throat. She took a deep breath and tried to calm herself, for she had to be in control of herself before she could hope to deal with Jo and Indio and-looking so smug, sitting in the bow-the miraculously recovered Manolo.
