Denny, in fact, is on record as saying that Victor Hugo was a terrible writer, and needed some "tidying u. If you're just looking to pad your reading CV with another of the "great books," then it doesn't matter which one you read. Might as well go with a shorter one. If you're looking to read the translation of Les Mis, that will make you feel like you are reading the original, hearing Victor Hugo's voice, then pick up Rose's translation. 190 people found this helpful.

This is the first book of the famous work by Victor Hugo. a town in the mountains of France. The bishop (éveque) is a very kind man. He's moved to the town with his sister, Madame Magloire, and their maid, Mademoiselle Baptistine. He's in charge of a hospital, but his house is bigger than the hospital, so he trades his house with the hospital.

Les Misérables is a French historical novel by Victor Hugo, first published in 1862, that is considered one of the greatest novels of the 19th century. In the English-speaking world, the novel is usually referred to by its original French title. However, several alternatives have been used, including The Miserables, The Wretched, The Miserable Ones, The Poor Ones, The Wretched Poor, The Victims and The Dispossessed.

1845 Victor Hugo starts writing Les Misérables. Hugo vows not to set foot on French soil till his removal. 1848 - 1851 Reign of King Louis Philippe ends with uprising and Louis Napoleon becomes President of the Second French Republic 1851 2 December: Louis Napoleon dissolves Parliament, is proclaimed President with full powers for ten years, ratified by a plebiscite. 1856 Publication of more poetry, Les Contemplations. 1861 Victor Hugo completes Les Misérables.

It is in the main a reprint of the English translation, in threevolumes, by Sir Lascelles Wraxall, which was made with the sanctionand advice of the author.

If you liked the movie or play, and if you like to read, you'll enjoy this book. The language and style, of course, are 19th century, so if you don't want to wade through lots of (wonderful) description and philosophical digressions, you should get an abridged version. But if you're willing to work a little, this book is very much worth the effort. Bishop Myriel is more developed, Inspector Javert's motives are more fully explored, and the characters of Fantine, Cosette, and Valjean are truly memorable. This is a novel that will stay with you long after you put it down.

All the original political, historical, social and revolutionary background for the triumph of the downtrodden and the rescue of the abandoned make this the true classic it ought to remain. One of the best books I have read. I have read it three times and find something new each time.

I bought it because I thought it would be in French. Very disapointing to find it translated. Original version should imply its original language.
