A Brief History of Lima’s Bridge of Sighs. Unlike its more famous namesake in Venice, Italy, the Peruvian Puente de los Suspiros was of simple construction and not exactly glamorous. The Puente de los Suspiros was built back in 1876 for entirely practical reasons: to span a small gap over a stream-cut gorge to connect Ayacucho Street with the Church of the Hermitage on the other side of the stream. When it was destroyed, along with much of Barranco, during the War of the Pacific in 1881, it was presumably more of an inconvenience rather than a terrible architectural loss.
Translation of 'Suspiros de España' by Rocío Jurado (María del Rocío Trinidad Mohedano Jurado ) from Spanish to English. Quiso Dios, con su poder. God wanted, in all his power, to cast four rays from the sun. and make a woman with them. And when He fulfilled his desire. in a garden of Spain I was born. like the rose grows in its rose-bush. Inside my soul I will carry you, cradle of glory, courage, and heraldry, Spain, I will never see you again, my heart sighs sorrowfully. Blessed land of my love, glorious land of perfume and passion, Spain, in every flowers to your feet. Oh poor me, mortal pain!
