PEDRO CALDERON DE LA BARCA (1600-1681) was one of the leading dramatists of the Spanish Golden Age. His father was Secretary to the Royal Treasury and a minor noble, and his mother was a devoutly religious woman who died when he was a child. Calderón studied canon law in preparation for his presumed career in the church, but in the 1620s he started to write verse, and his success in competitions attracted attention. The first known staging of one of his plays was a 1623 performance of Amor, Honor, Poder (Love, Honor, and Power).

By pedro calderon de la barca. Translated by edward fitzgerald. Pedro Calderon de la Barca was born in Madrid, January 17, 1600, of good family. Print ISBN 13: 978-1-4209-4400-6. He was educated at the Jesuit College in Madrid and at the University of Salamanca; and a doubtful tradition says that he began to write plays at the age of thirteen. His literary activity was interrupted for ten years, 1625-1635, by military service in Italy and the Low Countries, and again for a year or more in Catalonia.

First published in 1635 (or possibly in early 1636) during the Spanish Baroque period (NADV1), it is a philosophical allegory regarding the human situation and the mystery of life. The play has been described as "the supreme example of Spanish Golden Age drama".

Life is a Dream has been added to your Cart. Of all oeuvre on this subject it is indeed THE BEST!!! It is also a book on philosophy in rhymes. Magnificent!!! Please, do not miss this masterpiece.

Of all Calderon's works, "Life is a Dream" may be regarded as the most universal in its theme. It seeks to teach a lesson that may be learned from the philosophers and religious thinkers of many ages-that the world of our senses is a mere shadow, and that the only reality is to be found in the invisible and eternal. Combined with this in the plot is the tale of Abou Hassan from the "Arabian Nights," the main situations in which are turned to farcical purposes in the Induction to the Shakespearean "Taming of the Shrew.

The Scene of the first and third Acts lies on the Polish frontier: of the second Act, in Warsaw. As this version of Calderon's drama is not for acting, a higher and wider mountain-scene than practicable may be imagined for Rosaura's descent in the first Act and the soldiers' ascent in the last.

A new translation of Calderón's most popular mystery.

White gold
This book definitely looks like a bootleg version of the real Penguin Classics book. I bought this shipped Prime with Amazon as the seller, but I own many Penguin Classics and this is not that same soft cover like the rest. The cover does not appear the way it does in the picture. The cover and back text is blurry, and the front image is cropped. Also all of the text is not aligned the way a legitimate book would be. It's crooked.

Blueshaper
This play is a hidden gem. Calderon has written a classic comedy that follows the formula but ventures into classic philosophy as well: what is our life? Is it real? Is it a dream? If it is a dream, how then should we live our lives? This is the center of Oedipus Rex, with its fate versus free will theme, and Calderon explores it with humor and compassion. The Dover edition is inexpensive but doesn't cut corners, making it perfect for college students. I highly recommend it!

Steamy Ibis
This was a very good transaction, and a classic read. My son needed to read this story for a school report, and found the story impressive.

Swift Summer
A great comedic play that offers a wonderful (and unexpected) meditation on what dreaming actually is.

Altad
"What is life? An illusion, a shadow, a story, And the greatest good is little enough: for all life is a dream, and dreams themselves are only dreams"

Xlisiahal
The book looks like a pirated version of the penguin classics. The cover image is very blur

Goldfury
required for school but a good read.

I had to read this for world lit and I'm not sure why it's considered a masterpiece.
