It drew me in from the prologue. I appreciate Ms. Thomas' ability to be so emotionally vulnerable with her life story. This book was truly a testimony of an incredibly strong woman. This is my first read by Ms. Thomas and I look forward to reading her other books and hopefully something new that she writes as well!

Laying My Burdens Down is the eleventh studio album by country singer Willie Nelson, released in the autumn of 1970. Laying My Burdens Down was Nelson’s second RCA release of 1970 and fourth in two years, but the formula remained unchanged as producers Chet Atkins and Felton Jarvis continued applying the Nashville formula to Nelson’s recordings, much against the singer’s better judgement.

This was my first read by author Brenda Thomas, and I must admit, it took me through all kinds of changes. I wanted to scream, yell, cry, punch out folks, and shake some sense into a few of the characters. To have someone beat the happy out of you is something that I sadly know all too well. People on the outside looking in may say, well, why did she stay? It's easy to say what you will or won't do when you're not living that situation. My heart truly went out to her, especially when Russell stifled her writing.

This book had me all in my feelings, and I actually had to put it down for a couple of days, because it flooded me with memories. When I picked it back up and finished, I had to sit in my chair, taking a deep breath and drying my face. It's not often that a book can literally make me cry, but this one truly did. I cried with anger, I cried with sadness, and I also cried with hope and thankfulness.

I would recommend this book not only to women who are going through domestic abuse, but everyone as a whole. It's time that we stop sweeping this epidemic under the rug, or discussing it in hushed whispers.

Ladies, if you're in this situation, get help NOW! If you know someone who's in this situation, get them help! Don't wait until it's too late!

Kudos to you Ms. Thomas, for having the courage to bare your truth, and lay them open for the world to see! I commend you!

I recently met Ms. Thomas at a local book signing event where we struck up a convo about books and tv shows we liked. Little did I know that she was actually a successfully published author!

Laying Down My Burdens was a great read! I usually read more fiction books, so I wasn't exactly sure what to expect from this memoir. It drew me in from the prologue. This is my first read by Ms. Thomas and I look forward to reading her other books and hopefully something new that she writes as well!

Brenda Thomas has always been a phenomenal writer, which is why she has garnered so much success and admiration from her readers and fellow writers. Brenda was gracious enough to autograph a copy of her memoir at the Book Expo America. I had completed the book before I returned home; it was that intense.

It is amazing how people can endure so much and still make it through the fire, while others succumb to the little issues that life involves. Brenda has literally been through hell and yet, she has not only managed to survive but to flourish.

This book should be required reading for domestic violence agencies and for offenders. I commend Brenda for the courage it must have taken to not only write this book but to publish it. She realizes that being a victim is not a crime and I am sure this was a total cleasing experience for her. At the beginning she speaks about why she felt it was time to tell her story. How she was sitting and watching a group of little girls perform and realized that the majority of them were destined to go through similar hardships in life. Hopefully as more people speak up and others recognize that they are not alone, the world will be saved from some of the madness caused by a cycle of violence. I highly recommend this book. It is a great read.

An excellent book. Brenda is an astonishing writer, this book really gets to the dynamics of domestic violence and the cycle surrounding the abuse both the physical and the mental abuse how it can good to bad in one day or it can take many weeks between each episode.

This memoir was a very emotional, and draining read, but I couldn't put it down. It really touched me in a relatable way. As Brenda says, "Getting it together takes a lifetime." It really does. I'm a witness. Thank you for sharing your journey to here.

A very raw and personal account of the author's life and the things she went through to find herself and find a way to get out of a domestic violent relationship. This should be a must read.

Brenda Thomas' book was like an Urban fiction novel. Even though this was a true story I couldn't believe some of the things that went on in this relationship. She writes about her drug abuse and domestic violence in this toxic marriage. Brenda Thomas takes us on a journey into this volatile relationship and gives you the insight on overcoming these type of obstacles.

I whole-heartedly agree with token's comment about BT's addiction to abuse. While her story was intriguing, it was also at times tedious and exhausting to read because I had a difficult time understanding why she waited as long as she did to get away from her abuser. Unfortunately, I also was a victim of domestic violence (mainly mental) but thank God it only took ONE time for him to actually physically abuse me for me to get out of a bad situation. My concern also was what would I be teaching my daughter had I stayed, something I wish BT had considered with regard to her own children. Ms. Thomas, I'm glad you survived your abusive past, but (my opinion only) it took you way too long to do so.
