I'm sorry. I am, or used to be, a huge Stephanie Laurens fan. The first book I read was Captain Jack's Woman. What a great book! Lovable, interesting characters, both very brave and full of personality. The story was great, the sexual content, while explicit, was hot and I really cared what happened to the characters. From there, I went through all the Cynster novels as well as the Bastion Club books. I couldn't wait for the next book in the series which is why I have a bunch of hardbacks, lol. Then.....The Perfect Lover was published and I found it kind of interesting but also kind of tedious. In my opinion, it has been downhill from there. Each subsequent books becomes more and more tedious, the characters are less understandable as people (I want to grab, shake them, and scream at their obtuseness), and we spend WAY too much time inside the characters heads while nothing at all happens outside their heads. Things that do happen have happened before. Umm, small child of a tenant falls into icy water and is rescued by our hero. We've seen that in a previous book. I've purchased her books sporadically since then and been disappointed every time. I recently bought this one only to be bored to death - I almost didn't finish it. I will not be buying any new ones. I will, however, reread the old ones which I have already done several times since they have stood the test of time and repetition. What on earth happened to Stephanie Laurens?

Readers of BY WINTER'S LIGHT shouldn't be fooled. It is really a novella romance between a Cynster tutor and governess and an introduction to the next generation of Cynsters. The emphasis is on Lucilla Cynster whose book THE TEMPTING OF THOMAS CARRICK will be the first of the new generation.

THE STORY: It is 1837 and the Cynsters have gathered for Christmas at the home of Richard Cynster. Readers are introduced to the Cynster children and their tutors and governesses. Having reached the end of his tutor duties, Daniel Crosbie intends to ask Claire Meadows to marry him. Daniel has had his eye on Claire for years and now that his future seems secure, he is ready to make his move. Claire is a widow who doesn't intend to marry again. Christmas, however, is the season of miracles and Claire realizes that there is something about Daniel that makes her want to take a chance.

OPINION: This book is really about Lucilla and the others in the next generation. Lucilla meets up with the man who will be the hero in her book, Thomas Carrick. Honestly, I enjoyed the look into the Cynster family more than I cared about the romance between Daniel and Claire. That romance was adequate and seemed like a novella story, but I was much more interested in Lucilla, her brother Marcus, and Sebastian. I also really enjoyed seeing characters from the older generation.

WORTH MENTIONING: My favorite scenes were those few ones with Devil and Honoria who are still my favorite couple.

FINAL DECISION: Fans of the series will enjoy this book which is really a launching pad for the new generation. I don't think that anyone should start with this book because the multitudes of characters who readers are expected to know. The romance of the book is the plot device not a fully developed novel length romance.

CONNECTED BOOKS: BY WINTER'S LIGHT is the twenty-first book in the Cynster series. It is also a prequel to the next generation of Cynsters that starts with THE TEMPTING OF THOMAS CARRICK.

STAR RATING: I give this book 4 stars. Fans of the series will be pleased.

The story was sweet and a nice Christmas tale. There were areas that I needed clarification because I have not read previous books in this series. The lady and being lady touched is an area that needed clarification for me.

I loved the does get Helena and Algeria they were to cute. The grandma’s you just want to get to know. This tale has several stories in it. We have the Christmas festivities of the Cynster family. The romance of Claire and Daniel. The Christmas baby delivery by lucilla. The future of Lucille and Thomas Carrick. Thomas Carrick as lady touched. All this in the book occurs.

Each character is fun to hear about. Marcus in his quiet stead and Lucille with her confidence and growth into becoming lady of the vale. Claire in her fighting her feelings and reluctance to marriage. You hear her reason and just feel sad. Sad that she had to go through that. Daniel leaves a smile on your face with his determination and dogged pursuit of Claire. He truly is a great honorable guy. Louisa in her perceptiveness and the struggle she has ahead of her to be herself. Each character has a story, a personality and a way of getting a smile from you.

The Christmas festivities leave you feeling warm and fuzzy as does the Christmas baby delivery. The romance was sweet to watch unfold. Overall a sweet adorable read of a Christmas romance and joy of the season.

If you are not familiar with the Cynster Family, this book can confuse you. Happily, I feel like the Cynster's are part of my family, so I at least could following along with who belonged to whom. I found the story very sweet and warm. The story lines were lovely and you couldn't help but anticipate the happy endings. But I have been spoiled - because the Cynster family is so formidable I was waiting for more action, more controversy, more passion. I can't imagine Devil going to bed while his son was in a storm...now I know Sebastian is older now but...

I anticipate the Thomas' story, and hope there is a bit more excitement as he faces his fate with the Cynsters.
