Georgia Coffey is pregnant with her second child, and is desperate to find a nanny for her son Justin when she finds Harriet Major, who appears to be perfect. She's young and pretty, white, well educated, English speaking and available to start immediately. Georgia never does get around to actually checking Harriet's references, but Justin loves her and she fits well into their household - so well that Georgia convinces her to move in and live on the 3rd floor of their luxurious home in the New York suburbs. Larry Coffey is a wheeler-dealer on Wall Street, and they're enjoying the luxuries provided by his high income - a big mortgage, club memberships, housekeeper, shopping excursions, etc. Georgia is pampered and spoiled.

Larry's company decides to reduce their employment roles and Larry is given notice that he will be retained for only a few more months. But he decides not to tell Georgia, since he assumes he can start his own business, using the clients he had cultivated for his current company. There are some mysterious back-room dealings at his company that are told in several italicized chapters, and it usually isn't clear what they're talking about. You just know that something is going to go very wrong...

When Harriet takes off with Justin, their whole world falls apart. They don't even know who Harriet is or how to find her. Larry finally has to tell Georgia what is going on with his job, and it seems that somehow his employers are implicated in Justin's disappearance. I found it all rather unrealistic and difficult to follow, and the ending was really not plausible.

A real page turner. We all know at some point in life a person can be tempted by money...but who caves?? Living the high life can bring terrible heartache.
