We see that the crews are not profesional sailors but are,in almost every case, volunteer reservists who before the war were fashion photographers, delivery boys or bookies runners and who are now called upon to be professional Sailors.

This is a classic. It's Reeman's earliest fiction, and it's wrenching, in a very proper, 1950s British way. Reeman was there, and it shows. He's as interested in what's going on in the characters' heads as he is in the action. And, he captures beautifully, the callous, random horror that is war.

Avarm

There are naval novels that are more riveting, that are more action-packed, that have wonderfully developed plots and characters and which leave you exhausted from the tension. But this book by Douglas Reeman is a true gem of a book, placing the reader aboard the motor-torpedo boats that patrolled the coasts of wartime England. The story revolves around a worthy protagonist, sub-lieutenant Clive Royce and his crew and, of course, his boat. But it's not all war; there's a love interest here, as well as a nice glimpse of an England under siege from the German war machine. Reeman knows whereof he writes and he does a superb job of putting the reader on the bridge, feeling the stinging salt spray as life and death happens all around. I enjoyed this book and heartily recommend it, if you like thrillers that take place on the briny.

I agree with all the other reviewers that this is a outstanding book. One point that seems to have been missied is the reference to a member of Parliment saying that it was to expensive to fit the MTBs with diesel engines like the German E-boats had and as a result when hit by enemy rounds could turn them into floating bombs as the author points out without saying it. I really enjoyed this book as it is a classic lesson in learning the art of leadership. The volunteer reserves (wavey navy as they are sometimes refered to because of the insignia bands around the sleeves of the officers) made up a large part of the Royal Navy during WWII and this book gives them the credit they are due.

Though his books are somewhat formulaic (in that they follow the same basic sequence), they are very good books for getting a real feel for the costs of war, and how leadership is obtained and retained.

Classic Douglas Reeman -- his first book. Hadn't read it in years. Good to read it again. Largely biographical as Reeman served in Coastal Forces during WW2.

Good solid Reeman effort. Whether its reading under his own name or his nom de plume of Alexander Kent, he is very very good.
You feel that you are there with all the signs sounds and smells of a warship.

Douglas Reeman is a master at weaving a gripping story and placing it in historical context. His own experiences contribute to that I'm sure. There are not many novels about the small boat war in Europe, so this one is at the top of my list.
