Patrick Easter was a police officer in the Met for thirty years and during that time was part of the Marine Police force. His stint with the Marine Police coupled with a love of 18th Century history make him the perfect author for this subject.

Gripping stuff written by local boy Patrick Easter. As an Isle of Dogs resident loved reading about the historic environs. A really atmospheric book, you can feel the chill in the air and taste the smog!

Patrick Easter, who spent 30 years in the Met, is intelligent and bookish and might well have been the model for PD James’ copper-cum-writer Adam Dalgliesh.

The occasion is the launch party for his series featuring former naval officer Tom Pascoe. While in 2011 Easter is looking at the misty glimmer of Canary Wharf in the distance, his hero would have seen a very different view of the Thames.

Saint Patrick's Day, or the Feast of Saint Patrick (Irish: Lá Fhéile Pádraig, "the Day of the Festival of Patrick"), is a cultural and religious celebration held on 17 March, the traditional death date of Saint Patrick (c. AD 385–461),. AD 385–461), the foremost patron saint of Ireland.

Although my books are all works of fiction, the events portrayed in them did, in many cases, actually occur and . One was Patrick Colquhoun and the other was John Harriot. Both, simultaneously and independently, developed the idea of a body of police to patrol the Port of London.

Although my books are all works of fiction, the events portrayed in them did, in many cases, actually occur and Tom’s spirit continues to exist to this day in the men and women of the Metropolitan Police Marine Support Unit who patrol the River Thames. Of course many things have changed and the police of the 21st Century have no need for cutlasses or the massive boat guns carried by the crews of the rowing galleys at the turn of the 19th Century.

In the dark and slimy streets of Wapping a prostitute is beaten half to death, a not uncommon fate in late 18th century London. So begins this gripping tale set in 1798 in the Port of London: a cruel villain holds sway over the underworld. His name is Boylin. His face is scarred by lime and his back by the two hundred lashes he received following a naval court martial. He holds Captain Tom Pascoe responsible for his suffering. They meet again when Pascoe becomes River Surveyor for the newly formed marine police. They've had orders to investigate a sudden fall in government revenue that is affecting the nation's ability to fight the war against Napoleon and stem the rising tide of Irish rebellion. Pascoe knows that Boylin is behind it, but he can't prove anything, yet. THE WATERMEN follows these two adversaries across London as they try to outwit one another. Working alongside Pascoe is Sam Hart, a Jewish immigrant with his own agenda, Pascoe throws the rule-book out the window, scouring East London and the docklands in search of information. But fate takes a cruel twist when the two men find themselves involved with the same woman - there's much more at stake than the fate of the nation.

Pretty good, quick paced, vivid descriptions of era but not as intriguing as Sansom's books. Great use of the language of the era though. Still a good read, will read another one of his books.

... shame about the lacklustre characterisation.

Tom Pascoe, all round good egg, is unjustly fired from his job as Captain in the Navy and given a position as River Surveyor in the newly formed Thames Riverside Police. From the very beginning he realises his main problem will be the dastardly criminal, Joseph Boylin. Not only is he the crime supremo of the area, he was also subject to a severe naval punishment when serving on Captain Pascoe's ship and bears him a deadly grudge.

The smell of the river, the howling of the mob, the anti-semitism and the grinding poverty leap off the page.

This series has great potential.

Small Black
This was a colourful book that aptly brought out the grinding poverty and degradation of Georgian dockside London. I would like to see more from this author as he develops his writing.

If there is an issue with the book it is that things never got too difficult for the hero. The bad guy was often impotent and fearful and easily defeated at most turns. The protagonist was able to deal with all challenges without breaking much of a sweat. So I never had the feeling that things were ever going to turn out in anything but total victory. Also, a love interest sub-plot depends on a coincidence of such magnitude that even for a piece of fiction, seems too far-fetched.

This is a first book by a new author, I found it slow to start, but when the story starts to evolve it becomes a very good read.
Patrck Easter has realy gone into the ways of the docklands of old and the way the dockers made thier living.
It is a good read.
