Beloved Enemy, written by Al Lacy, is a historical fiction novel in the Christian market that takes place in early Civil War 1861, particularly covering the Bull Run battle. I suppose I should have known this after reading a bit of one of his other books, but the thought never occurred. I love history, as I said, but the way Mr. Lacy incorporated the history was distracting to the story line.

May 18, 2012 Amber rated it it was amazing. Beloved Enemy by Al Lacy is book one in his Battles of Destiny series. However, upon receipt of the book and jumping right in to it, I struggled to be drawn in by the story line and writing style. I will confess I had never read one of Mr. Lacy's books before and therefore didn't know what to expect.

Beloved Enemy, written by Al Lacy, is a historical fiction novel in the Christian market that takes place in early Civil War 1861, particularly covering the Bull Run battle. Beloved Enemy is 356 pages in length, with an excerpt of the first chapter of another novel at the end.

Jenny Jordan, daughter of Mexican War hero Lieutenant Colonel Joshua Jordan, finds herself torn between the North and South in loyalty when her father, a member of the Senate Military Committee, decides to turn traitor and become a spy for the Southern cause. Jenny feels even more torn when her heart finds its way into the heart of a Zouave named Buck Brownell. When Buck and Jenny fall in love, her father demands that Buck leave her alone. Her father also suggests that she join him in becoming a spy for the Confederacy. Jenny's allegiance lies with her father and her beloved Virginia, but her heart also follows after a man whose loyalty remains with President Lincoln and the Union.

I've read some of Lacy's novels in the past, and I've always enjoyed them. I love how he is able to throw a lot of battle into his novels. It's obvious that he's interested in the historical aspect of his writing. (This book may annoy someone who has done a lot of research into Civil War history. It isn't perfect history. This is a work of fiction, and the writer takes liberties with some things, as many writers do with historical fiction.) When I sat down to begin this novel, I had no problems getting right into the "thick" of it, and once I got involved I was in it till the end!

I loved Jenny's character. However, I'd have loved to have seen more of her (but wouldn't have wanted to lose the story as sacrifice). I also loved the action centered around Buck. His humanity was developed well. The biggest character, though, that I'd have really liked to have seen more of is Joshua Jordan. He was a spy, and I'd have liked to have seen more of the inner workings of that. His character involvement was good, but a little more attention to that would've been interesting.

The flow from one scene of battle to another was a little choppy but not unbearable. There were scenes with other characters who weren't a big part of the story, and though those parts--I felt--weren't necessary to tell, I still enjoyed reading them. (Focus on Stonewall Jackson is one example.)

All in all, I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to my counterparts who enjoy reading historical fiction with a little romance tied in.

Jenny Jordan, the daughter of Colonel Jeffrey Jordan, takes a job as a sectary for the Senate Military Committee that was offered by the newly elected Abraham Lincoln, just as the Civil War begins. Soon she meets Corporal Francis "Buck" Brownell, who is part of the Zouave from New York. The Union soldier begins courting Jenny, which is somewhat of a problem because she is original from the southern state of Virginia.

Before long, she finds out that her father is a spy for the Confederate, and he asks his daughter to help him take a message to the Confederate. Jenny loves her country and Buck, but she is devoted to her father and her home state of Virginia. She must become a Confederate spy, but she hopes she can still have a future with Buck.

I received "Beloved Enemy" from the publisher in exchange for this review. At the time the book was published this was the 5oth western novel published by Al Lacy! His experience and love for the genre is shown in the details he used depicting the start of the Civil War. Even thought Jenny and Buck are the main characters, Abraham Lincoln and his family have great deal to do in this third novel in the Battles of Destiny series. I especially liked the opening chapter, which showed Colonel Elmer Ellsworth and his Pinkerton men escorting the President-elect Lincoln and his family from Springfield, Illinois to Washington D.C. by train. I didn't realize how dangerous it was for Lincoln when he was elected.

The author must have done a great deal of research to get all the historical details correct for the battle scenes, in which "Beloved Enemy" chronicles the first battle of Bull Run. The book is combination of North and South (North and South Trilogy Part One) and The Killer Angels, two other great books that I recommend. Overall, "Beloved Enemy" is incredible read for Civil War and western buffs.

Wow. Okay. My thoughts on this book are mixed. It's like throwing my emotions and writing opinions into a mixing bowl, and spinning them all up into a gooey mess. So maybe that's not the best analogy... but...

When I first had the opportunity to review this book, I snatched it up pretty quick. I do like historical fiction, and the fact that it was about the war between the states, and spies, and such things only interested me further. But when I started reading, I wasn't the most happy camper. It IS an interesting story. At least it should be. All the elements are there. Everything's in place. Before I say more, I should tell you one thing. This book took me almost an entire YEAR to read. I'm sure for any book lover this is very odd. I was constantly reading something else that I found more interesting. I would feel bad, and try to finish it, but would soon tire of it. So, you ask, what was so bad?

It wasn't allll bad, of course. But there were a few elements that threw me off. Al Lacy has a certain way of writing that doesn't really appeal to me. I suppose I should have known this after reading a bit of one of his other books, but the thought never occurred. I love history, as I said, but the way Mr. Lacy incorporated the history was distracting to the story line. He would have a chapter with a bit about the main characters, and then lots and lots of paragraphs and chapters dedicated to unimportant characters who usually just died at the end of the chapter. It wasn't the most fun experience. I could have enjoyed the book without reading about the guy and his dog who died, or such. I don't know if it was of historical significance, but it really just made me sad and want the book over with!

The positive side of things is that when I could push myself to read, I did enjoy it for the most part, even if the writing style and storyline were a bit off. I rate the book three stars, and I say that I'm being generous sometimes. :D Don't just take my opinion, though, because many people have rated this five stars.
