Elmer Stephen Kelton (April 29, 1926 – August 22, 2009) was an American journalist and writer, known particularly for his Western novels. His pseudonyms are: Tom Early, Alex Hawk, Lee McElroy. Kelton was born at a place called Horse Camp on the Five. His parents were Robert William "Buck" Kelton- (30 June 1901 – 15 June 1980) and Neta Beatrice "Bea" (née Parker).

At first I didn't know if I would like this book because I have only read one Elmer Kelton novel. It was actually very good. Kelton writes in the same style as L'ouis L'amour, who is my favorite western novel author. Kelton provides a solid story with a lot of background because he has obviously done a lot of research. The book is not loaded down with filthy language, sexual situations, and details that need to be left out like writers like
Cotton Smith and other modern writers put in their novels.

I have read just about every title written by Elmer Kelton. He is a master of telling stories of western life in post civil war times. Read about the hard life of a U.S. Marshal in pursuit of outlaws and whiskey peddlers in the Oklahoma territory. A man of intense personal conviction of right vs. wrong. A good page turner for those who enjoy the western genre.

I was shocked at the amount of deputies that were killed during Judge Parkers tenure. that alone does show that the true west was very violent at times and in certain areas.

Just finished listening to this CD. This one is really enjoyable. We like Elmer Kelton, he is a good writer like Louis L Amour.

based on history and a great page turner. As with all of kelton''s books fool of historical facts. last few pages have history of Judge Issac Parker.

Very good

I have tried to read every book that I can find written by Elmer and this is the last one I have found. It depicts the struggle between bootleggers, Indians, and early settlers in frontier days.
It is an excellent book.
