Gilmore Jennifer (EN).

Gilmore Jennifer (EN). Golden Country, Jennifer Gilmore's masterful and irreverent reinvention of the Jewish American novel, captures the exuberance of the American dream while exposing its underbelly - disillusionment, greed, and the disaffection bred by success. As Gilmore's charmingly flawed characters witness and shape history, they come to embody America's greatness, as well as its greatest imperfections.

Golden Country is terrific-a definite must. Gilmore is a wonderful writer with an amazing ability to develop such strong characters and images in the book that they live with you even after you've finished the book. There's the dazzle of broadway; the rawness of Jewish mafia; and the toughness of immigrant survival. Gilmore's "golden" touch is to develop ironies about the American dream through such unforgetable, fascinating characters. It's a classic, not to be missed.

Intricately plotted and anecdote-packed, Jennifer Gilmore’s debut novel, Golden Country, details the complex history of two intertwined families: the Blooms and the Brodskys. Both are Jewish, both touched with genius and dishonesty, as they strive toward the twin goals of material success and social acceptance in America. In a narrative that hopscotches across the decades of the 20th century, Gilmore conjures the young ganef Solomon Brodsky, known to all as the Terrier, whose dealings with the mob estrange him from his brother, Joseph, a hardworking young man who rises from humble beginnings as a door-to-door salesman to fame and fortune as the inventor of the first.

**DEBUT FICTION**Golden Country vividly brings to life the intertwining stories of three immigrants seeking their fortunes: the handsome and ambitious Seymour, a salesman turned gangster turned Broadway producer; the gentle and pragmatic Joseph, a door-to-door salesman who is driven to invent a cleanser effective enough to wipe away the shame of his brother’s mob connections; and the irresistible Frances Gold, who grows up in Brooklyn, stars in Seymour’s first show, and marries the man who invents television. Their three families, though inextricably connected for years, are brought together for the first time by the engagement of Seymour’s son and Joseph’s daughter. David and Miriam’s marriage must endure the inheritance of not only their parents’ wealth but also the burdens of their pasts. Spanning the first half of the twentieth century, Golden Country captures the exuberance of the American dream while exposing its underbelly―disillusionment, greed, and the disaffection bred by success.

The books begins well enough with the promise of a good story backed by good writing. But then it disintegrates quickly with the stilted flow of not only the story itself, but of plots or paragraphs, sometimes even of sentences. Sometimes a whole paragraph seemed to be written just to support a pithy statement the author wanted to insert into the story. Many times I cringed at some preposterous metaphors, which I couldn't discern whether they were used as attempts at humor or they were the author's version of Henry Jamesian metaphor. The writing style keeps changing between those of famous authors, not quite finding its own voice.

I do not think the author is a terrible writer, however. It gave me the impression that the author knows how to write intellectually, but couldn't actually pull it off. The goal seems lofty - a historical, multi-generation Jewish immigrant family/gangster saga that is poignant and funny at times, but the result somehow became none of the above.

The author's obsessive use of the word "scream," by the way, is going to make me scratch the eyes out of the next person who mouths that word.

Great read! This is a story about growing up, feeling emotions finally mature, and seeing at last, the best part of your parents and their lives.
Loved it. Okie Reading Specialist

This book was a very warm and inviting read. The characters are so down to earth. The author did a fabulous job in drawing the reader into the heart of each one.

Was disappointed with the book. Author tried to cover every concept that could be written about. Would not recommend this book

Skunk Black
Book is about the lives of poor Jewish immigrants, their successes, failures and their families. The book held no big surprises, but flowed along nicely.

Because it's not a page turner. If that's what you want buy another Stephen King - and your flight should be so late you should finish it before take off!!! It's light fiction, beautifully written (a glossary wouldn't hurt, Jennila).

To prepare for our book clubs upcoming season of books, we read all possible selections. So while members are perusing the chosen books, I'll be feasting on these deluscious books carefully chosen as dessert!
