It's 1959. The Armstrongs are off on their annual hop-picking holiday. But bad news greets them when they hear of plans to mechanise the hop-picking, robbing them of their country idyll. It becomes clear that this summer will changes lives forever.

interesting look at life in the sixties in a hop garden. reminds me of my younger days growing up in England

This is an interesting, not too heavy read, about East End women going to Kent each summer to pick hops.
The women get out of the smoke and grime of London and lead a much healthier life, making their own money for a few months, while their menfolk have to cope.
One girl finds love for the first time with a Kentish lad while an older woman has secretly been having an affair which is rekindled each year.
At the same time there are mechanical hop pickers being introduced on some farms which will put an end to the summer work.
I thought there could have been more sub-plots but it is a nice read with a good sense of both locations and well-drawn characters.

This author has written about the East End during the Second World War in 'Down Stepney Way' and 'Over Bethnal Green'.
