I found Casca: Soldier of Fortune to be missing the usual suspense and mystery of previous (chronologically) episodes of the immortal character. A short book, such as Barry Sadler composes, does not lend itself to this kind of schism or coffee. But I much prefer the medieval or ancient adventures of our eternally cursed legionnaire that delve more deeply into his psyche. This work is too divergent from the original feel of Sadler's authorship.

The stories revolve around the life of Casca Rufio Longinus, the soldier in the Roman legions who drove the Holy Lance into the side of Jesus Christ on Golgotha, and (in the novels) who is doomed by Jesus to wander the Earth aimlessly, always as a soldier, until the Second Coming. The character is loosely based on the Longinus legend of Christianity.

Another great story of Casca the Conqueror as history brings him to his era of being a Soldier of Fortune. Casca and his team of friends are hired to go into communist held lands and rescue a family unable to escape the blood letting. Upon entry into the country, his team is discovered and a chase through the jungle occurs. Each main character is developed enough for the reader to either root for their success or prey for their death. The end of the story is true Casca. I listened to this in audio and the narrator was excellent. A good pace and use of rise and reflection as the story is presented. Worth the time to listen!

I found Casca: Soldier of Fortune to be missing the usual suspense and mystery of previous (chronologically) episodes of the immortal character. In large part, the more contemporary setting of the Vietnam era/Indochinese region was too recent in history to provide an adequately romantic vision of life and war. Casca (a.k.a. Casey Romain) plays a less pivotal role with narator time being more equally split among his cohorts in the jungle. It took me over half of the book to really sink into the plot. I couldn't identify with the supporting cast. A short book, such as Barry Sadler composes, does not lend itself to this kind of schism. If you really like modern war stories, this might still be your cup of tea...or coffee. But I much prefer the medieval or ancient adventures of our eternally cursed legionnaire that delve more deeply into his psyche. This work is too divergent from the original feel of Sadler's authorship.
