Caroline Fremont Jones is a thoroughly modern miss whose father has no real idea how to control her or make her . I agree with the synopsis of Day's File of Fremont Jones here on GoodReads in that it compares Jones to Grafton's Kinsey Millhone.

Caroline Fremont Jones is a thoroughly modern miss whose father has no real idea how to control her or make her confirm to society’s expectations of how women should act. She has now finished her college education and is at a bit of a loss on what to do next. The characters certainly have a very similar vibe and I think fans of Grafton's Alphabet Series would enjoy Jones.

Dianne Day provides a delightful heroine and a lively, twisty, intriguing mystery. -Carolyn G. Hart, author of Death on Demand and the Henrie O mysteries.

Introducing Fremont Jones, a feminist ahead of her time, whose career as a self-employed businesswoman, a type-writer, leads her to mystery and adventure in turn-of-the-century San Francisco. com User, October 21, 2002. Caroline Fremont Jones is a college educated Bostonian in the early years of the 20th century. That woman has her nephew in mind for Caroline's husband. She has vowed never to marry, so when her father and Augusta are on their honeymoon, she leaves for San Fransisco.

The strange files of fremont jones. My name is Fremont Jones. Wonderfully fres. s much a quirky, turn-of-the-century character study, a love letter to a city, as it is a traditional romance/whodunit. Chillin. ay won’t disappoint even the hard-core suspense addict. I’m the deputy lighthouse keeper, serving for Mrs. Houck while she is on a six-month leave of absence. I’m driving her rig because it seemed the best and fastest way to get over here.

Brave, resourceful, adventurous Fremont (née Caroline) Jones is a woman ahead of her time. Hungry for independence, she's traded in her conventional life in Boston for a career as a "type-writer" in turn-of-the-century San Francisco. But Fremont soon discovers that her clients aren't always what they appear to be, and that in doing her job she's transcribing her way into a wealth of mystery--and mortal danger....Dashing lawyer Justin Cameron well-nigh sweeps Fremont Jones off her feet--and into a situation ripe with perilous intrigue. A client meets an untimely death that Fremant suspects is linked to the paper she typed for him, of which she can recall but one small fragment. And her attempts to disentangle reality and imagination in the gothic tales penned by Edgar Allan Partridge--whose demeanor is one of terror under the barest restraint--send her up the rocky California coast on a mission of discovery from which she may not return....A riveting, atmospheric mix of intrigue and humor introduces a new investigator as cultivated as Sherlock Holmes and as spunky as Kinsey Millhone.

I must say I found the setting/time very enjoyalbe as well as the character of Freemont Jones. I found it refreshing so see such a pioneering character. Freemont Jones sets out to San Francisco to start her own business as a typist and ends up a sleuth! Freemont investigates several little mysteries in this book and discovers quite a lot about the people she encounters. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because I would have liked the part relating to the lighthouse and the church to be a little more creepy; afterall, she was investgating a ghost and werewolf. I also found the epilogue very interesting.

I really liked this book, but I am a fan of Victorian-era mysteries. The character is interesting. The situation is San Francisco of around the year 1900. The mix of plots went together well.

Maybe I expected too much from this series, but while it was an entertaining read, I'm not sure I want to continue on to the next book. Don't get me wrong: the setting was delightful, the writing was really good, the characters were fun . . . maybe this just wasn't the right book for my tastes. Hey - after a summer of reading heavy biographies that depressed me, this Fremont Jones tale was a lovely break. However, this one book in the series was enough for me. I think I like my reading material with a tad more heft.

I selecteed this book by virture of recommends by Amazon, in the section if you liked this book, you will like..I read Carolyn Hart, Sharyn McCrumb, and light mysteries. Dianne Day wove an interesting plot, and introduced me to an unusual young woman sleuth, livng in 1905 San Francisco. I look forward to other romps with Freemont Jones.

I like the surprise that Fremont is a woman! The intrigue of boyfried, the mystery man and Edgar Alan kept me reading. I would read another of Day's mysteries.

The book started out interesting but became unreal. It got into witchcraft which was unreal and turned me off.

Back in the day, times were different. Much so in prim and proper Boston of 100 years ago.

It's 1905 and the reader can picture the family reaction when Fremont Jones graduates from Wellesley . Thinking of Fremont as a prim daughter of Boston society would be wrong. Fremont wanted more out of life and moved to San Francisco to become a private investigator. She was always inquisitive and self starting and thought this would be a natural outlet for her talents.

As she opens her agency, she meets an author who writes in a style of Arthur Conan Doyle but better because, he states, his stories are true. She also meets a Chinese man who wants a document drawn.

Soon after, the papers tell of the death of the Chinese man and more adventures follow.

There is a good view of San Francisco in 1905 and the realistic writing practically speaks for itself.

This is a story that should entertain courageous young women without a lot of violence.
