I've bought all of Joe Weber's books in hard copy, usually first releases, and enjoyed them immensely. So I have to say I was extremely surprised and disappointed in this latest book, Dancing with the Dragon. It's like Clive Cussler meets The Avengers or Austin Powers

I've bought all of Joe Weber's books in hard copy, usually first releases, and enjoyed them immensely. It's like Clive Cussler meets The Avengers or Austin Powers. It has none of the depth and weight of the prior books. The dialogue is silly, the characters are shallow, the action is comic-book-like. It's one preposterous and unrealistic scene after another, and I found myself wishing both heroes would die from one of the countless attempts on their lives.

Dancing with the Dragon book. Joe Weber is a former USMC carrier-qualified fighter pilot. His novels have appeared on the best-seller lists of the New York Times, Publishers Weekly, the Associated Press, and the Chicago Tribune. Mr. Weber holds a Master of Science Degree in Aviation Management. He is an Airline Transport Rated pilot with over 10,500 hours of flight time in 43 different types of aircraft, ranging from aerobatic biplanes and high-performance military jets to four engine transports.

I read my first Joe Weber novel (Primary Target) in 1999 and, I must say, I was hooked by his writing style. When I heard he had a new book out (Dancing with the Dragon) I couldn't wait to get my hands on a copy. Weber combines gripping action, a well-thought-out plot, believable characters and a pace that moves at break-neck speed. Unlike some who write military techno-thrillers, he doesn't slow down the action with techno-babble. I cleared my weekend calendar and dove in headfirst. I was not disappointed

Dancing with the Dragon. I wish to thank those who assisted with the development of this book.

They have been translated into Chinese, Japanese, Hebrew, Spanish, Polish, Russian, and Italian. After his release from active duty Weber flew commercially until 1989. Best-selling author Joe Weber was a carrier-qualified ed pilot for the Unite States Marine Corps. The People's Republic of China poses the most dangerous as well as least manageable military threat the United States faces early in the twenty-first century. Narrated by: Alexander Cendese. In a page-turning techno-thriller from start to cliff-hanging finish, bestselling author Joe Weber delivers a gripping plot that could have been torn from tomorrow’s headlines.During routine night operations off Southern California, an F/A-18 from the USS Abraham Lincoln is inexplicably blown from the sky. The Pentagon wants to throw a blanket over the incident, but then another navy fighter jet is mysteriously destroyed in midair. The president orders an investigation to find out who is responsible for the attacks–and why. Tagged for the job: ex-CIA operatives and former military pilots Scott Dalton and Jackie Sullivan. As Dalton and Sullivan proceed, they are surprised to learn that the loss of the navy jets is just the latest in a series of seemingly unrelated and previously unexplained losses of American combat aircraft. Yet their investigation soon uncovers a deadly conspiracy that seems to lead directly to the heart of Beijing. From the Paperback edition.

This book is totally captivating with a plot rich in geopolitical tension and furious battles with China over their aggression in Taiwan and Panama. A host of different U.S. fixed-wing and rotary-wing warplanes are featured in many air-to-air and air-to-surface battles. Another thrilling part is when Scott and Jackie make a harrowing attempt to retrieve an important scientist deep within China. And, to top it off, there's a Chinese megaton nuclear missile launch targeting Alaska and Hawaii. The main characters are well developed, and the composition is excellent. It was particularly refreshing to read about an American President who boldly faces crises straight on and takes military action when needed.

Take two examples:
1. The Chinese hit an American aircraft carrier with a nuclear-tipped cruise missile. The bow catapults are put out of action, but the ship proceeds with launch and recovery using the waist catapults. What was the yield on this warhead, 500 lbs?
2. The Chinese launch four ICBM's at Hawaii and Alaska. Two are knocked down by "EKT's". One lands in Alaska, fails to detonate, but kills a ranger and six tourists (I swear!). The other lands off the coast of Oahu, causes EMP and blinding flash damage. The US decides not to retaliate for these attacks on two of the 50 United States.
How ridiculous and unrealistic can we get?
Hopefully his next book will be back in the fold.

Another great book by Joe Weber. Once started, be prepared to read for a while - because you won’t want to put this book down !!

A story that pulls you in and an ending that makes you wonder what took so long. The Red Chinese don't allow individuals to run so far from their baseline. Enjoyable journey.

Just what I needed a good story for a change. Have been reading so many books while waiting for favorite authors to come thru.

Joe Weber, once again, hits it out of the park. This was a thriller that I couldn't put down. In fact, I found myself reading it at stop lights! This story is hauntingly realistic and believable.
