There are so many astounding science fiction books out there that this has been one of the hardest lists for me to put together. I have added and culled. Considered by many to be one of the greatest science fiction novels of all time, this book coined the term Time Machine which is almost exclusively used to refer to any device that allows humans to move through time. The book’s main character is an amateur inventor who lives in London. He is never identified, instead being referred to simply as The Time Traveller.

The Braintree Institute saved Maddy Grant's life by implanting her with technology designed to correct her brain injury...and turn her into a killer. But is it all in Maddy's mind? Seeking the truth, she embarks on a harrowing adventure, a satirical journey into the depths of her soul and the dark side of the American dream.

I loved the book so much that I read it again a few days after finishing it the first time. It really draws you in and before you know it you will be glued to this suspense-filled psychological thriller. I recommend paying a lot of attention the whole way through so you don't get lost, it really is a fantastic read if you understand it. The author is very bold and is not afraid to offend some readers so be prepared if you are a sensitive reader.

I hope you enjoy the book because I sure did.

Mad Skills by Walter Greatshell reminded me a bit of Flowers for Algernon in the beginning, lots of differences but the overall science of it was similar. But ending was totally different and I was so glad! It didn't get you emotionally wrapped up in the character like Flowers did, or at least to me but enough I still felt for the girl. I don't think I would want to cry like I did in Flowers! This book had good interaction and showed how she was becoming more and more. Pretty good.

Maddy Grant awakens fourteen months after a near fatal accident to discover that scientists have performed a radical new experiment on her. Prior to surgery, Maddy's brain had been damaged, leaving her in a vegetative state. Now, an implant in her brain has given her increased mental capacity. But her impressive mind, comes at the cost of her emotional stability. Maddy's increasing frustration builds to a dangerous level. And the more she learns about Braintree and the other patients, the more she is convinced that they are using her. Maddy becomes convinced they are turning her into a killer.

Greatshell has created an impressive blend of science fiction, horror, and psychological thriller. Maddy is a complex character with more than her share of troubles that affect her emotionally and threaten her sanity. At times events are a bit confusing. It's hard to tell what's real, adding to the intense suspense and mystery. There is never a dull moment, with fast-paced excitement and drama. And by the end, the big reveal is encompasses much more than I thought, involving a major conspiracy. Mad Skills was constantly surprising, erratic, dark, and violent.

Short answer: Complex, refreshing and fast paced with real multidimensional people and not cookie cutter characters.

Take some science fiction mix with a few cups of thriller; add a dash of "what's next?" and some social commentary; toss and serve. As with many books several bits are present in others but Mr. Greatshell brings it all together as a fantastic story all his own.

I notice that some reviewers comment on the social commentary and saw it as preaching. I see how from the point of view of the character it helps understand her feelings etc. I neither agree or disagree with the expressed views, but take them as they are.. a part of the story.

During the first opening sections that set up the story (no real spoiler) we find that Maddy tries reading so fast she cuts her fingers on the pages... something I have in common with her after buying this book!

Buy it. You won't regret it.

And as always:
Would I look at any other books by this author in the future? Yes
Would I spend list price on it again? Yes

Walter Greatshell is a writer with whom fans of smart, propulsive, genre fiction need to become well acquainted. His first book, 'Xombies' (now 'Xombies; Apocalypse Blues') is essential reading, as is its first sequel, 'Xombies: Apocalypticon'. Now, with his third novel, Greatshell introduces a completely new scenario (remapping the human mind) and compelling new female lead character (Maddy Grant). I won't synopsize the plot here, because I enjoyed going in blind and discovering what was there without prior knowledge (no spoilers!). What I will say is that Greatshell turns out beautifully crafted sci-fi stories with richly developed characters. 'If Flowers for Algernon', 'Die Hard' and 'MacGyver' had a baby it might be named 'Mad Skills'. I sincerely hope this book is just the first of many to chronicle the ongoing adventures of Maddy Grant.

I was hooked by this Sci-fi book in the first chapter. It is a very interesting idea of how technology that could be used for good is cannibalized and used for commercializing and weaponizing. Hope to see Maddy again in a future book because her story is not done!

I've read several novels in the last year about "enhancing the human brain." This is by far the most entertaining and "believable." I put believable in quotes because the presentation is good, whether or not the science would actually work. Fast action, well thought out characters, interesting plot: I couldn't wish for a better way to spend a rainy day in Portland. And it's science fiction, not fantasy.
