Jane Aiken Hodge (December 4, 1917 – June 17, 2009) was an American-born British writer. Born near Cambridge, Massachusetts, the second child of Pulitzer prize-winning poet Conrad Aiken and his first wife, the writer Jessie McDonald. Jane Hodge was 3 years old when her family moved to Great Britain, settling in Rye, East Sussex where her younger sister, Joan, who would become a novelist and a children's writer, was born. Their parents' marriage was dissolved in 1929.

A rather talky romance from veteran Hodge: here, it's 1811 and a young English girl (daughter of the heroine of Windover, 1992) and her friend, a renowned beauty and popular singer, find themselves on the political anthill of Sicily during the Napoleonic wars. Seventeen-year-old Charlotte Comryn, of Hull, has just refused the proposal of John Thornton, whom she suspects of having an eye on the Comryn family bank. Ill and miserable, she flees to Beth Prior, her mother's former servant, now established as a performer and able to be choosy about her men. Beth has been persuaded to sail.

Entertaining would be the best way to describe this book.

It is not one of those novels that you just can't put down, but through most of it you do vaguely wonder what will happen and want to find out. The characters are likeable (or dislikeabke in the case of "villains") enough; the plot is amusing enough.

In my opinion the best aspect of the book, what really differentiate it from most of its kind is the setting. The south of Italy during the Napolean war. True, there are no depictions of the beautiful scenery one kind find in Sicily, but there is a good account of what life in Palermo was like in those days. It is a good example of historical fiction, mixing real characters with made up ones.

As for the narrative, it is not trying at all -a fault many novels of this genre have-. Yet I can't say it was great. It is more of a light reading that you'll forget about in a couple of months. Still, like I said, entertaining enough.

I really enjoy this author's work and I've read quite a few of her novels over the years. I've often felt in a way that she never received the recognition that she deserved, as say Phyllis Whitney or other writers of the romantic suspense genre.

Whilst I wouldn't rate this novel of Jane Aiken Hodge as her best work, it is still an engaging read. I've always felt that her heroines had some backbone, substance to them and Beth Prior, and to a lesser extent Charlotte Comyn aren't the exception here.

I also enjoyed that there are two complete, gentler romances on offer here. For a while I wasn't completely sure who would end up with who. I also appreciated the historical detail, the slice of history. I found this story to be well worth the time.

Very different Napoleonic Wars story set in Sicily and following the adventures of a very naive English Heiress and her older friend Beth who is a singer and actress. There is spying, abductions, opera, various attractive men and serious politics with the Queen of Naples who has fled to Sicily after Napoleon invaded Naples. Charlotte is 17 and although she has the makings of a strong heroine, this book is about her growing up. For Beth who has agreed to help the British government, this trip is about restoring her reputation. Of the men it becomes interesting to see who will actually become the hero. Altogether a excellent read.

This book is pretty entertaining for its style an genre. I think that more attention could have been paid to developing each character's feelings and reasons for their behavior, especially the romances between the two couples and the younger heroine's reasons for leaving home. There was a lot going on in this book; a revolution, a kidnap plot, an assassination attempt and although hints were given as to everyones motivations, some of the dangling ends were left loose. Hodge is a very talented writer so I kind of felt that she was just writing to be writing in this one.

Enjoyed it!

This is an exciting and lively offering by a writer of historical romance; sheltered heiress Charlotte Comyn flees a marriage proposal, a nervous stomach and misunderstandings with her parents. Disguised in her brother's clothes, she appears at the London home of her mother's estranged best friend, the famous actress Beth Prior, who, though short on reputation, is long on beauty, talent and brains. Jane Aiken Hodge gives the reader believable characters that do plausible things, faultlessly incorporated into the history of its period setting. A most enjoyable read and comes highly recommended.

Ishnjurus
This book offers a view into the political machinations around the King and Queen of Naples, temporarily ruling Sicily during the Napoleanic wars. The plot takes interesting turns and includes a character who is probably suffering from anerexia. The writer will remind the reader of Georgette Heyer.

Great book! I really enjoyed this story but it starts out a bit slow but really gets fascinating as the story unfolds. Mrs. Hodge really had a way with words and I have enjoyed all her books so far. I hope to eventually read all her romance books.
