As guerillas and their brethren, the bushwhackers, infest the country more or less, picketing is dangerous as well as difficult. Between the Rappahannock and the Potomac lies a vast territory which abounds in creeks, marshes, deep, dark forests, with only here and there a village or settlement. A little to the west of this plain extend the Bull Run Mountains, with their ravines and caverns.

I confess to reading this book simply because I grew up close to where most of the story takes place. It’s not an area frequently featured in fiction (or non-fiction for that matter). Overall I enjoyed this book, though not so much for the reason that caused me to read it. It’s a quick, easy read with just enough action and mystery to carry the reader along. Yet, while I suppose it goes without saying that the writer is no Larry McMurtry, he’s definitely no Louis L’Amour, either. For starters he fails to use the landscape to his advantage. Bell County spans a geography of rugged limestone hills and canyons pocked with squat cedar trees, mesquite, cactus, and lined with clear-watered limestone-bottomed creeks. Moving east the hills give way to fertile and flat blacklands filled with pecans and oaks and cottonwoods. It’s populated by horny toads, rattlesnakes, and jackrabbits and, in the mid-19th century, wolves and mountain lions. Yet, Davis exploits little of this to good effect. Really, this story could have been set just about anywhere in the post-Civil War south.

The story revolves around Lance Kinkaid, an amnesiac Union-army veteran trying to discover his past. Kinkaid is a Western-hero archetype. There’s nothing wrong with that by itself, but Kinkaid’s sheer perfection renders him less interesting than he could be. It’s not just that he’s extraordinarily honest and able in the skills necessary to lead and survive in the wild West, but he’s also opposed to slavery, sympathetic to the Indians, and skeptical about Manifest Destiny. To top it off he even has a diminutive sidekick with an ironic nickname.

The dialogue is frequently clichéd and sometimes more wooden than Kaw-Liga. I wish to avoid spoilers, but let’s just say the plot requires that a family prominent in actions and local ownership be virtually unknown by residents of the area.

Still, I really did enjoy the book despite myself and readers looking for a classic-style Western could do a lot worse than Bell County Bushwackers.

A thoroughly good historical western mystery. I finished this book in just a few nights, because the story moves along nicely.

Great story! Well written.

"Bell County Bushwhackers" is a suspenseful western novel. Will Davis uses old west facts to complement his thriller. It is hard to put this book down since the story builds to a surprise ending. I enjoyed it very much.
