The Hawks of Delamere book. Edward Marston's Domesday series continues to be a delight for me. Set in 11th century England during William the Conqueror's reign the series follows a group of Royal commissioners and they sort out property disputes. Of course as this is a mystery series, there is always a murder.

Just better In 1988, Miles began another series, set in the theatrical world of Elizabethan London. The Stallions of Woodstock (1997). The Foxes of Warwick (1999).

Edward Marston is perhaps best known for his Edgar-nominated series of theatrical . When Hugh Lupus, Earl of Chester, leads a hunting party into the Forest of Delamere his prized hawk is killed by an arrow

When Hugh Lupus, Earl of Chester, leads a hunting party into the Forest of Delamere his prized hawk is killed by an arrow. Two poachers are discovered hiding in the forest, and the Earl demands that they be imprisoned, but unanswered questions linger. Meanwhile, Ralph Delchard and Gervase Bret, Domesday commissioners for the King, are guests of the Earl while they settle a land dispute in nearby Winchester.

First edition with full number line bound in red cloth with gold spine lettering. 8vo (8.75 X 5.50") size,246pp. A near fine copy in a fine dust jacket. The book has the usual tanning to the edges of the pages else a fine copy in a fine dust jacket.
Cover art has little to do with this delightful mystery by Edw. Marston set soon after the Norman conquest (Domesday Series). The characters are believable although the dialogue seems a bit stilted at times. This series has been out of print/unavailable until recently, when I was delighted to find the series available on Kindle. There are quite a few books in the series, each set in a different location in England while the royal commissioners iron out property disputes that came to light during the initial inventory ordered by William the Conqueror. The Delamere Forest is located near (or on?) the border between England and Wales (close to Chester), so this book brings in the fierce nationalism of the Welsh as well as the attitudes of the Normans and the Saxons. Recommended for anyone interested in this historical period and a thoroughly enjoyable read.

Another excellent Medieval Whodunnit by Marston!

I love mysteries in Medieval settings and I enjoy the whole Domesday series very much. I'm not fond of Marston's other series but I do enjoy his Dillman & Masefield series written as Conrad Allen.
