Studies Early Middle Ages (History), Intellectual History, and Manuscripts (Medieval Studies). The Latin vocabulary of intellectual life in the Middle Ages has been the focus of the CIVICIMA-Series: nine volumes of conference proceedings, monographs and collective works. It studies three examples of annotating books from the Carolingian period. It argues that the marginal annotations we find in books of the period have multiple purposes: not just education or explanation, but also (textual) criticism, mnemonic aids, discussion and critique.
