Iranianness has an important theme in modern Persian literature from its very beginnings
Iranianness has an important theme in modern Persian literature from its very beginnings. As part of the answer to the question of self-definition, some Persian Iranian writers, like Mohammad Ali Jamalzadeh, Sadeq Chubak, Mehdi Akhavan Sales, and Nader Naderpour, have used images of Arabs to define Iran as a nation and themselves as Iranian in contrast to an Arab Other. Nader Naderpour portrays the Arab Other as dark, savage and inhuman, in images of the irrational, blood and the moon; he portrays the Iranian Self as the creator of an enlightened civilization in images of Zoroastrian fire, the sun and springtime.
Persians are no exception. How should one frame a discussion of this "image" in a book that claims to deal with it in a literary and social context?
Persians are no exception. Anyone familiar with premodern Persian literature would be aware of its frequently expressed negative images of nonPersians surrounding the Persian world: Central Asian Turks, Africans (particularly those from Zanzibar), inhabitants of the Indian subcontinent, European peoples, and Jews. Arabs, from the time of Ferdowsi (d. 1020 or 1025), are thought of as uncivilized, barbarous, lizard-eaters, and drinkers of camel's milk. How should one frame a discussion of this "image" in a book that claims to deal with it in a literary and social context?
This volume of the Cambridge History of Arabic Literature provides an authoritative, comprehensive critical survey of creative writing in Arabic from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day.
Series: The Cambridge History of Arabic Literature.
The instance that marked the shift in the whole of Arabic literature can be attributed to the Arab World-West contact during the 19th and early 20th century. This contact resulted in the gradual replacement of Classical Arabic forms with Western ones. Genres like plays, novels, and short stories were coming to the fore. Although the exact date in which this reformation in literary production occurred is unknown, the process is usually referred to as the Arabic nahda (revival or renaissance).
It spans over two-and-a-half millennia. Its sources have been within Greater Iran including present-day Iran,.
